We went out to the ballgames today that the grandkids were playing in. They are kindergarden and first grade. I am amazed that people actually spend their time doing this. Those kids had no idea what they were doing on the court and spent most of their time horsing around with each other. Why do parents think their kids have to be in sports all the time when they are not old enough to understand the fundamentals of the game. Maybe they will by the time they are in junior high school, but that is years away.

It's more than about the sport at that age.

Kids at that age need to learn how to play in groups and work together. It helps to build co-ordination. Not to mention it's exercise, something most kids (or adults for that matter) don't get enough of anymore thanks to the electronics age.

I agree with this. Its about teaching the kids to play well and share with others and work as a team! And I think its adorable to see them! It just kind of makes me giggle and smile!
Another way to look at it is by getting them into the sport that young they just learn naturally what to do and how the rules work and the fundementals. And they learn at a slower pace. And if they start playing in middle school, some may feel like they have to catch up to the kids who have been playing since 5yrs old and that they are learning slower.
I really wish my parents would have gotten me into sports when I was that young, but because of my heart problems they were afraid to, so then when I got older I was always afraid I wasnt as good as the other girls and just never really tried out. I regret that a lot now.

Wow, I am surprised they have a team that young!! I agree kids should be playing games, but something far less complicated than basketball. There are games for kids who are that young that they can understand. Things like, chasing each other and playing hide and seek maybe. There you have it- they are learning coordination by playing together...But basketball??come on...

When I was that young, parents didn't bother to see what kids do to play together. We just went to kidergarden and had play time and coordinated our own games with a teacher standing there to make sure no one gets hurt or in trouble. Now, all of a sudden everything is controlled, with kids having play dates and everything and being forced to play specific games...ughh IMO it's all unnecessary..

I work for a sports organisation and to get funding from the government we have to carry out objectives and this year is getting young people in sport. Right now, it is a good idea to "get them when they are young" so that they start getting into the habit of being active like natalie_ca said. And like she mentions, it is not only about exercise, but also about getting motor skills and eye-hand coordination. You don't learn coordination by chasing each other - you learn it by catching and throwing, as timing is important when it comes to catching and throwing.

My son plays touch rugby for his school - the team was terrible at the start of the season but as they played more games, they understood the game better and they improved so much that they got 3rd at their tournament.

You know there are some of us in our fifties and sixties who managed to grow up without all that. Our lives revolved around our parents schedule, which is not how it is now. We were active, we learned good motor skills, good eye-hand coordintion and we didn't turn out to be so bad. I guess I am old fashioned since I grew up in the days when children were taught that it was not all about them and their schedules.

Yes, but back in those times and our times, we didn't have so much of the electronic stuff that causes kids nowadays to prefer to sit in front of a television and play videogames for hours. As I am sure you are aware, obesity is a growing issue (no pun intended).

that and I think a lot more parents didnt worry so much about their kids going out and playing in the neighborhood with out an adult watching them. And I think a lot of kids arent getting that because they either do not live in an area with a lot of other kids, or that the parents are worried about them going on and wont allow them to go off and play with the other kids the same.

That's a good point...ughhh it makes me sad- we have to "force" kids to play now

How unnatural are our lives becoming...

Most kids have no idea what you mean when you say they should go play stickball in the street.

But, when I taught PE (got stuck with it for a year), I didn't play competitive games. Or, at least, we didn't keep score. We played nerf football, because the kids were at an age where they really couldn't handle a real football. And I had them playing co-ed "California one-pitch," a softball game that gets maximum participation from everyone and minimum accent on cut-throat competition.

Maybe I'm just not competitive enough...
