I can't have fresh flowers in the house, as some of my cats like to attack and eat them (and house plants). I love the scent of lemons (and oranges). I'd like to be greeted with a realistic lemon (or orange) smell when I walk in the front door, when I come home. I just love that scent! Apart from leaving out a strongly-scented lemon candle, does anyone know of something else I could use, that cats wouldn't like, and is safe to have around them? I would like it to be as realistic in smell as possible. I also thought about a sachet tucked somewhere in the foyer (away from the cats!), but wonder if there's lemon potpourri??? Thanks!

I bought one of those reed diffusers at Safeway. Lemongrass fragrance. Citrus is my most favourite smell, and this diffuser smells sooooo yummy!

I have an actual lemon tree in a planter with a pedastal bottom. Lemon is nontoxic - and the cats don't show much interest in it - even Daisy. I don't know if this would be practical since your cats do like plants, but it smells great and didn't cost me much on eBay.

Funny you should say that! Mine just arrived yesterday. The only problem is that I can't keep it in the front of the house, as there's no sunlight there (I have to move it to the study, in the back of the house). Also, though I like the scent, it doesn't smell like lemons to me. At least the cats aren't bothering it--just sniffing the pot itself. It already has very, very tiny baby lemons starting on it!

I bought mine on eBay, too! The funny thing is, the seller's cat is shown in the pic, laying in the pot. I asked the seller if her cat chewed the plant; she only sometimes bats the Meyer lemons around!

The blooms smell wonderful! (Though not exactly like lemons either.) I am envious that you have baby lemons! I need to go take a look at my plant and see if it does!

I have an aromatic lamp. I love it. If you light it for an hour, the smell stays around for a while. There isn't a flame except when you first light it. It has a stone that is lit but it is under the metal top. You can buy different oil scents. My cats are always amused by candles, but have never gone near the lamp and it is sitting right here on the computer desk where they lay all the time.

This is where I got my lamp. http://www.clairdelune.ca/en/categor...romatic-lamps/

These are the different scents they have there. http://www.clairdelune.ca/en/categor...me-fragrances/

I currently have tiramisu in mine and it smells so good. They do have a lemon scent.

I really like the kitchen lemon scent from bath and body works. I know they have it in the soap, but they may have it in the wall flowers (which I personally love) other than that not sure! I wish I had a lemon tree! I may have to go look for one on ebay now!

Here's the one I bought:

(The cat is named Ellie, BTW!)

Martha did a wonderful job! I know the tree sounds pricey, but it arrived 3 days ago in excellent condition, and is much larger than the others offered on eBay. It also arrived with lots of blooms, and some very, very tiny lemons starting (they look like lime-colored bumps when the blooms drop off). Most sellers are selling just Meyer lemon SEEDS. If you grow Meyer lemons from seed (the best plants are grafted, like Martha's), they usually won't produce any fruit, or very little, and it can take up to 7 years to find that out. I priced Meyer lemon trees in Home Depot last year--it was a gorgeous, though shrubby, tree (about 2 ft tall), and was on sale for $65; think it was reduced from $85, or more. Martha also refunded $2.00 on the shipping, as she charges actual shipping. She was a delight to do business with, and packed the tree very well.

You want Meyer Improved lemon trees. This stock is safe, and not prone to disease, like the Meyers sold decades ago. (There was an epidemic of some sort of plant disease with them, and vitually all of the crops in the U.S. had to be destroyed to prevent the spread; hence the "improved" variety invention.)

They tolerate household temps from about 60F-70'sF. If you live below zone 7, you may be able to plant it outdoors. I can't (zone 7), but I can grow it in a pot indoors, and take it outside after the last frost in May. It likes a sunny window.

I'm waiting a week or so to see if I kill mine or not; then I plan to buy one of her orange and lime trees. My only concern is that mine won't get enough light; the plant is beautiful right now.

we can't have plants either so we use candles or a spray. we get this awesome spray from the grocery store called citrus magic. it is usually on the very bottom shelf because it isn't a name brand. it smells exactly like orange and lemon peels.

Have you tried using a light ring? Its a brass ring you set on top of a standard lightbulb in a lamp and you put a few drops of scented oil in it and the heat of the lightbulb warms it. The lampshade prevents the cats from getting to it. You could get some lemon scented oil and use it in there. I don't see these in stores much anymore but a search found that this website has both the rings and lemon scented oil. I have never ordered from that site, so I can't speak for their service, but thought I'd offer the suggestion.

I believe they make lemon potpourri, or you could get unscented and add lemon scented oil to it.
