Tilly,

my cute little black and white feral was diagnoised with a thryiod condition in the late summer/early fall. We put her on medication and she was doing fine. Until recently...

SHe is eating anything that isn't nailed down and she is even trying to eat stuff that IS nailed down like the carpet. She devours her food and wakes me up in the middle of the night for more food. Both cats get a can of wet food a day and there is a big bowl of dry food on the floor as well that is always filled. Last night she ate the rest of my dinner (tacos) when I wasn't looking and she was JUST about to snag a fried Plantian when I stopped her. She just looked at me and purred. then I noticed that she has a bald spot on her paw. The poor little thing is starting to LOSE her fur!

BEFORE she was diagnosed with a thryoid condition she lost tons of weight and was down to around 4 lbs. Once we put her on medication she gained weight like mad and was back up to 6 1/2 half pounds which is perfect for her since she is a petite kitty.

ANYWAY she has a recheck in March to see if the dosage is correct but I called today and asked the vet to see her sooner since she is starting to lose her fur. He said that was a good idea and she is going in Tuesday they wanted to see her monday but there is no way I can take off work on Monday when I have a day off on Tuesday.

SO please send some vibes that TIlly's issue is just that the medication needs to be adjusted and not something more serious. SHe is a young cat (just turned 3) and my other cat Moo, is totallly in love with her. PLUS she is starting to come out of her shell and is starting to turn into a very friendly cat. (at first I was the only person who saw her infact people didn't believe me when I said I have 2 cats!)

that it's just a matter of changing the meds a bit and that soon both of you will be feeling better.

for Tilly!

I know what you mean about nobody knowing she exists... if I didn't have pictures of Holland (and cat paraphernalia laying all over the house) nobody would believe that I even have a cat! I hope it's something as easy as adjusting her meds.

Are you sure she is only 3 years old, it is practically unheard of for a cat under the age of 8 to have a thyroid condition?

yup. She's only 3 years old. I got her when she was about 6 months. Even though she is feral she was discovered with the rest of her litter under someone's porch. The person who found them called the vet and they were trapped and bought in. So she was definately a kitten. My vet is stumped as to why such a young cat is having thryoid issues but he said its very rare but not unheard of and ran a thryoid panel jsut in case. AND it turns out I have a very rare kitty.

So Tilly has a thyriod issue and my other cat moo has asthma and seperation anxiety. (Tilly is feral and moo was rescued from an abusive household) BUT they are the best of friends.

OK so we had our vet appointment this morning and it was long and not as simple as I had thought or hoped.

Turns out, she is losing a tremdious amount of fur and she is bald in four spots and starting to lose fur on her ears. The vet took out a brush and said yeah the fur is coming off too easily and she is losing alot of it.

He was stumped because he weighed her and she weight a little more then last time. So, what happened is he is running a complete blood work up on her including rerunning the thyroid panel. He said he is going to check everything to see what we are missing. If it turns out there is nothing in the blood work or if the thryoid comes back normal then we will keep her on the dosage she is on and then run a skin biospy of the bald spots to see if she has a skin condition, a G.I workup and possibily talk about some behavior issues that could be causing the fur loss and how to stop it. But he dosen't think its behavioral since he said you don't get fur loss in the spots she has them with a cat that is overgrooming one area.

Being true to her nature she won't let him take a look at her belly...she curled herself into a ball and wouldn't unfold. He got a laugh at that my little pacifist kitty NO hissing or growling just passive resistance. She did try to walk off the table when he was clipping her claws which was pretty funny.

BUT the good news is he doesn't think she has anything life threatening but its still something we need to treat. AND he still thinks she is around 3 because his first question was are you sure she is only 3? and then he went back into the records and said yeah you got her as a kitten. SO he deemed her just an unsual case.

Poor little doll...
I'm glad the vet doesn't think it is life threatening, but the not knowing must be hard for you to go through. I'll keep sending vibes!

YAY!! Some good news!

I got a surprise call from the vet today (I wasn't excepting his call until next week.) AND he told me that Tilly's blood work came back good!! He said what is going on is the thyroid medication is too high so now her thyroid is TOO active. SO what we are doing is stopping the medication for a week and next week I am going to call him with an update and then we will cut her dosage to he is thinking a half a pill a day because she needs something but doesn't need as much as she has been getting.

He said the only other thing he is going to keep an eye on is her kidney function was a little high but he believes that too was from the medication but he will keep an eye on her for that as well!!

YAY!!!

I am glad it was because of the meds. Because of your post, I am going to take Arthur in and get his checked again. I think he needs his meds upped.
