They sure don't make appliances like they used too!!!

I bought my first microwave in 1990 and it lived a long and well used life and finally died in July 2007.

I used my Air Miles to get a new microwave.

Today, 2.5 years after getting it, it too died!! Well, I think it died. It turns on but it makes a horrid sound and if I leave it run I smell burnt plastic or something. Needless to say I'm not using it.

So I just ordered another microwave using more air miles. And while I was shopping I ordered a 2 pound bread maker and a 6 quart crock pot.

Hope this microwave lasts longer than this last one did!

A moment of silence for the dead microwave!

I totally agree applicances just aren't made well. I blew up my first microwave in only a year and a half and my new mircowave is starting to go too. (this one was a hand me down from my sister)

What I find are REALLY poorly made are coffeemakers. I got through those faster then microwaves at a ratio of 2 to one. (two coffemakers to one microwave)

A what?

I sure that would be handy at work, but you might prefer a breadmaker for home.

I met my sister for coffee this morning, and we were just saying how things don't last long. I bought a small travel hairdryer 8 years ago for £10 and it's still going strong. I bought another one this morning for when i go on holiday and that was under £5 and the reviews on it were excellent, one of them saying it was better than her expensive Babyliss hairdryer.

I pluggged it in to try it when i got home, and it's similar to the one i've got

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to mourn the passing of our dear friend, the microwave. It was a good little microwave, but its good little life was just not meant to be a long life. Lets all bow our heads

I guess appliance manufacturers figured out that if they make appliances that don't last, then they end up making more money. The end result being that we have to replace things more often

My condolences. Our dishwasher died last week and I think my microwave is getting jealous because the dishwasher was replaced.

That stinks!

We found ours on the street
It was nicer than the one we had so we traded up. We live a block from a ritzy neighbourhood so alot our stuff is from the ritzy area when they put their "perfectly usable and nice garbage" out on the street

Sorry to hear about your microwave! We've been lucky with ours, but not with coffee makers nor toaster ovens. Coffee makers are the worst! Even the expensive ones die quickly.

BTW, you'll love that slow cooker! Make lots of soups, and freeze them in batches (and, when you get your new microwave, take them out of the freezer, and nuke 'em). I don't know if you eat meat, but I make a wonderful shredded, slow-cooked beef that also freezes well. I make if for parties, and people go nuts over it, and it's very simple to make:

1, 3-4lb beef roast
1 envelope Lipton's Onion Soup Mix (BTW, you can freeze the packets, if you live alone; just throw it in frozen)
Some ketchup
1-2 cups water

Using a meat rack, place the roast on the rack in the slow cooker. Sprinkle the DRY soup mix over the roast; add 1 cup of water. Squirt some ketchup over the roast. Cover, and cook on HIGH at least 4 hours; 7-8 hours are much better. Check every hour to see if you need more water. This makes a thick "gravy". When done, shred with forks in the slow cooker. I like to serve it on buns, with melted shredded cheddar cheese. You can also serve it over mashed potatoes, rice, etc. Serves about 8-10, if using on buns, etc.

I also have a bread machine, but hardly use it. You'll love it, though--and the smell is wonderful.

We've had our current microwave for about 14 years now. Its only the second one we've had since we've been married. Both have been Amana's. But I do think its taking longer to heat items than in the past. I don't know if that's a sign or not.

Last week I stopped at the store I purchased both of my current vaccum cleaners. My current upright is at least 15 years old and the small cannister is just about the same.
The store owner says quality shows. (The upright is a Eureka Sanitaire).
I do have my eye on a replacement. Its not a Dyson cause he stays just too many problems with them starting at the 3-4 year mark. He said to check out some of the vaccum cleaner forums for info as he has 9 currently in the shop to be repaired!

Microwaves should last a long time since all the folks I know only use them for reheating food. I have never known anyone who actually cooks in one.

My microwave is dying too. This is my 3rd. I have had it about 18 months. My first microwave lasted 16 years. I gave it to a friend when I bought a new one. My second one died just after 1 year. My first is still working. My toaster is dying too. You have to flip the bread half way through. Dh bought me this one about 18 months ago. He threw my old toaster out, after all it was almost 30. we got it for a wedding gift.

Mine is still going. I got it in 1986 so it is 24 years old. It was expensive at the time ($700) but I think I got my money's worth. I'm going to be sad when it finally stops working.

My toaster is one of those old stainless steel types from the 1950's. I've replaced an element in it about 20 years ago along with the cord because it was frayed. It makes the best toast!

It's similar to this one.

Your toaster looks like the one we had when I was growing up.

I got mine in 1986 too....I got it for free for signing a lease.
It's one of those little square ones that are either "on" or "off". I only use it for reheating, or melting ingredients, so it's fine by me!

We have only been in our house a year and the same microwave is going strong. I'm not sure how old it is though. I guess it could crash at any moment
