Newbie to being owned by a Cat

Hi there, I am Debbie from Houston. I guess it was the end August last year we were outside and kept hearing a meowing sound.
Finally located the source, a little stray cat. She was starving.
We had ony had dogs, birds and fish all of our lives so did not have any cat food around. All our dog babies have since gone and we only have the bird now, anyways - we were going to give the little one some dog food we keep on hands for passer biers in the neighborhood and figured she would go back where she came from.
Well she stayed, so we figured ok - outside cat we would let her stay if she wanted to. Couple of weeks went by and she was still here, so it was only the right thing to take her down to our vet and get her shots and help keep her healthy. Another month went by had to take her back for her 2nd round of Lukemia proventiive shots ??
By then she was starting to grown on us, so then we took her in to be spayed, as there are a lot of male cats that roam.
So now our little stray cat that was going to be an outside cat has been given a chance to come inside. Ok, so she can stay in a night every now and then. When we get up she eats and I put her outside, well she figured out when she eats the next step is to go outside so she decided she could hide somewhere and I would not have time to find her before heading out the door to go to work.
So now she is a full time house cat, and only goes outside when she wants to (which is not very often) but we love her.
I know nothing about cats but trying to read as much and just learn by trial and error.
I believe she is what is called a Tortise Shell, she is georgeous - well anyway to use she is.
Did not really intend on keeping her, so just gave her KITKAT as the name, but call her kiki and if she so desires, she may come to me when I speak her name but that is only if she has a mind to.

Ohhhhh she is SO beautiful! What a face! No wonder she grew on you! Obviously she stuck around for a reason. Welcome Debbie!

Such a pretty cat! I love the "racing stripe" on the nose!

Having a cat is very different from any other pet, as you're discovering. They can be extremely intelligent...and as dumb as a rock. When they get panicked, they will run without regard to anything, which is one way they get hit by cars.

I'm sure you've discovered that this site if officially anti-declawing and pro-inside-cat. Declawing is seen more and more as a cruel treatment of a cat, and indoor cats live immensely longer than outdoor cats, especially in urban/surburban settings.

It looks like you took in about 10 pounds of love, to me!

What a beautiful girl, and how lucky she found such a loving home. Yes, you'll find that cats have their own personalities, but they also have their own ways of expressing their love for their humans.

For example, when I was first owned, I didn't realize that dropping onto the floor and showing their stomachs was one way a cat demonstrates total trust - even if she doesn't let you actually touch that sensitive tummy.

And when I read that coming right up to you, and then putting their rear ends right in your face (like my boy does every evening when we go to bed) is really a sign of love and trust - which makes sense - you're vulnerable to anything coming up behind you. What better sign than to tell your human 'I love you - I know you have my back'?

But thank you again for looking out for your girl - I bet you'll feel very rewarded as the years go on.

Yes she's a tortie, and a beautiful example of the pattern. Enjoy her, cats are an experience like no other.

That happened to us too! ...only we didn't have dogs or a bird. A member of TCS, StefanZ has this wonderful way of putting it - cats have a wonderful ability of "pleasing themselves in."

Of course, they grew on us, and we got really involved in rescue - and have literally rescued hundreds (started a no kill shelter) - but kept "just" 7 of them for ourselves.

Of course - we didn't even know how to pet a cat at first! Dogs love belly rubs and chin rubs - and while some of our kitties love chin scritches, they all love cheek rubs. Who knew? And try to rub that tummy on most of them... and risk your arm! We call that experiential learning.

Gary, of course, was very offended at first when our first kitty would rub up against him and then turn his butt to him... Thankfully we found TCS was here to help.

She's a beautiful girl - and looks like she's right where she should be.
