How to get Female cat to like new Male cat..

Hi Guys,

I have a 4yrs Female cat, and she doesn't seem to like other cats at all.. she doesn't fight but she hisses when he gets too close, The Male cat is about 2.5yrs old we got him an year and a half ago, for the most part they keep to themselves.. but my question is why doesn't she like him?? and what can I do to get them to like each other.. I heard someone mention putting a bit baby powder on both of them.. ?

PS: The female cat does not like other cats either.. We've had her since she was a kitten, and at the time she was not in contact with any other cats.. I've heard of a lot of people say give it time, but I doubt she will change her attitude towards him..

Anyone know what i can do?

I honestly don't believe there is a single thing that you can do. Sorry.

I have one who is the same way. It's not a scent thing with her, it had nothing to do with how they were introduced, or anything else that happened in my home. She simply doesn't like other cats - she's willing to tolerate them as long as they leave her be, though. I believe that she was raised as an only cat for 3-4 years of her life. She's used to things her way and that's just her personality.

Count yourself lucky that no one is fighting.

If you are lucky, your female will be friendlier towards other cats when she begins mellowing in her ripe old age. My senior Joji was always a loner and not only did she hiss but she would get into fights. Now that she is old and going deaf, she bathes the younger ones and tolerates the other adults.

You really can't do anything to make them be friends. You can try Feliway plug ins or Rescue Remedy in their water but if they've been together this long without being friends I don't know that they'll change much.

So long as they are not fighting I'd just leave them be.

Yeah its not so much the male cat, he actually seems to like her.. but everytime he attempts to get close she hisses.. I guess It'll stay the same..

I wouldn't push it, but, if your girl has a favorite treat or play thing, maybe any time you notice her in a more friendly position with your boy, reward the girl with the treat, and keep telling her you love her and she's number 1. But, your situation really isn't that bad - at least there's no blood on the floor!

May not do a thing, and she may be one of those cats who are perfectly happy being alone, but when I got my boy, I went out of my way to give them good things when my girl was even vaguely polite to the boy. They're not constant companions, but at least they'll groom each other and usually only play chase, rather than being totally aloof.

If both are spayed/neutered then its probably just the way things will be. Females tend to be more territorial then males and don't always bond with other cats. If she didn't like other cats, there is not much you can do to get them to "like" each other after over a year together.

Ling will be 5 yrs old and she tolerates our boys. When we got Charlie (our first Ocicat) he was only 4 months old and she hated him for over 6 months! She accepted our 2nd Ocicat (5 months old when we got him) in about a month. But she honestly tolerates them - she doesn't like them.

She would rather have the house and dog to herself. Nothing we can do to change her personality.

kitties seem to have their own politics and etiquette, and i don't think there's anything we can do to influence the dynamic between them. believe me, i've tried. as long as they are all treated equally, they'll sort things out amongst themselves. if they AREN'T treated equally, then jealously, etc. could be playing a part in how she feels.

our oldest girl (9), spent the first 5 years of her life as an only cat and is kind of our loner now. she'll tolerate the other cats, but has no interest in being buddies. but still, after 4 years together she still surprises us now and then by initiating play, or laying fairly close to the others. things are still changing, although verrrry slowly. small steps.

Nora doesn't like other cats. She liked Gus b/c he was here before she was, but the two other kittens we've brought in since we got her have just been BARELY tolerated. That's part of the reason my husband won't let us get any more cats. She is completely content being the only child that isn't naked (she thinks she's human and finds it disgusting that we don't wear our fur. lol)
