Someone, PLEASE teach Barack Obama how to say Corpsman! Geesh, the man is Commander if Chief for goodness sake.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

he pronounced it phonetically. I bet he's never heard that word spoken before, or has heard it rarely enough to forget how to say it..

Sometimes, when I learn a word through reading it rather than hearing it I don't know how to pronounce it, even though I know its meaning...I'm sure it's happened to everyone.
But, it IS very odd for the commander in chief to never have heard the word "corps" before..

It is President "Barack ObamA"
I would think you should know that by now?? Just saying Especially coming from you, who gave such a hard time to a fellow member for calling your city "Vegas", instead of "LAS Vegas"...
Sounds like you lead a very exciting life, by the way...

I agree, it IS odd and the idea of the president never hearing the word spoken before just scares me. He is highly educated but doesn't know how to pronounce "corps"?

I agree, it is a small thing, but the military probably didn't appreciate it being called "corpses".

I hear "Marine Corpse" and "man's laughter" (manslaughter) from my students, but I wouldn't have expected it from Obama.

I wonder how he pronounces "gauge"?

You are opening up a whole 'nother can of worms with that remark, Skippy. Shame on you.

I don't guess my husband heard that speech. But I bet it is their topic of conversation tonight. (He's at mess night) For those who don't know it's a glorified way to have all the guys get together without their spouses. Even though they do have to wear their Dress Blues.

EDIT: I have been ill educated~ they are not allowed to talk politics.

Let us know what your husband and his buddies thought of the "Corpse-Man" comment that Barack made 3 times. I would love to know if they laughed or rolled their eyes or were disgusted.

Ah, posts like the original post keep life interesting...

I keep hearing these nit pick topics........At least he isn't saying nuculear or terrist.....
I never watch or listen to Obama speak. I get annoyed and backtalk him, so if I'm interested I just read what he said after the fact. Of course, you miss what he's wearing or not wearing, and whether he knew how to pronounce what he was reading or not, but I prefer it that way.

He can pronounce "teleprompter".
I think it terrible to make fun of someone because of the way they speak or how they pronounce things. We all have our idiosyncrasies, so I don't think we should be throwing stones at anyone.
The President was bitten by his dependence on the teleprompter and his lack of world experience. You can't expect someone so young to know EVERYTHING, can you?

Just as a minor point (nit picking, again!), Jimmy Carter used those pronunciations, too. And I have heard a number of people in both politics (such as James Carville) and the nuclear industry interviewed on such places as NPR who used those pronunciations.

I've heard a lot of people say nucular too, including my high school chemistry teacher
My theory is that someone with very high authority started this trend of mispronouncing the word nuclear out of ignorance, and others followed just because they thought he has to be right.

And my guess would be that "someone with very high authority" might have been Jimmy Carter.

However, you know the Brits say we Americans not only mispronounce aluminum, but misspell it, too. I doubt that will happen with nuclear, but you never know.

And yes, as a person with a degree in English and French, I have TWO languages in which to fuss about misspellings and mispronunciations!

Don't know if you caught my edit, but they aren't allowed to talk about politics and they can't say anything negative at all. Apparently if they do they can get into a lot of trouble. So I won't be posting anything else in this topic. I wouldn't want him getting into trouble because of me.

Ahhh....don't ask, don't tell. No wait...that's something else.

Actually, I don't remember a single thing Jimmy Carter ever said, although I was quite a fan of his 16.5% CD rates vs the .02% we get now. That and Billy Beer.

It's a good thing we don't know who you really are, isn't it?

That's okay, your non-answer IS my answer. No worries.

I sure hope Barack didn't offend any brave Marines out there.

To all the Marines out there, please excuse Barack, he is new at this stuff.

So Bush and Obama are using the same dictionary?

Actually, Obama's problem was unfamiliarity with military terms, which would not be unusual in the general population since the end of the draft.

Bushisms are largely regionalisms, which have been the bane of national politicians for as long as the U.S. has been a nation.

That may be so, but surely he's familiar with the Peace Corps?
