I was out shopping with one of my best friends today. It was the first time we had been together since we lost our Speedboat last Monday. That is mainly because I didn't want to be around anyone. She was asking me about him and she made the statement she has never loved an animal. I was shocked because she seems to have always understood how much I love mine. She and her husband have come over to take care of our cats while we went on vacation. When my soulmate, Max, died in '95, she gave me a beautiful Hibiscus bush to plant next to my screened in porch and told me to name it the Max Tree. I just couldn't believe it when she said what she did and I didn't know anything to say, so I said nothing.

My personal thought was I feel sorry for someone who can't love an animal.

Does she have pets or has she ever? It's shocking to hear someone say that, but maybe she just hasn't had a pet to get close to. I don't see how a person can understand your pain of losing a pet when they have never even loved one. I agree with kialie....she's missing out.

I'm sorry about Speedboat.

I don't get your friend's way of thinking, though I know plenty of people like her.

She and her husband have had numerous cats before I knew them. Her husband always loved the cats and cried when something happened to one.
Maybe she didn't have anywhen she was a child. I have had cats all my life.
I can't imagine what life would be like without a cat.

I don't think it is that she can't love an animal...it sounds maybe like she has never had the opportunity?! That's a big difference. She seems to be very sympathetic to your loss and also seems like a very caring, wonderful friend.
Maybe she would really like to have a kitty or dog...maybe her DH doesn't.

I agree that it may be that she hasnt had the chance. While her and her husband have had cats, maybe she has never felt like they were hers. Maybe the cats have always been closer to the husband or maybe she feels like she is a 3rd wheel with the husband and the cats? Or maybe the cats have had a personality where they have not had that connection yet.
I think she does have the ability to love an animal, she just hasnt found the right one yet!
She seems like a great and caring friend though!

How sad for her. Despite the heartbreak when one passes my life would have been so empty without them.

Like everyone else, I feel sorry for her. Just to cuddle on the couch or hear their soft purr makes me fall in love with them over and over.

My problem is I fall in love with any animal I come into contact with!

I know people like that, who have had animals in their lives, but don't really feel all that much for them. A male friend of mine simply cannot understand the love we have for our cats. When I told him one time that one of my cats had passed away, he just shrugged his shoulders and said, "Yeah." And then he couldn't understand why I didn't speak to him for months!

To be honest, I have a difficult time trusting people who don't have at least one furkid in their lives, whether that furkid is a cat, dog, bird (OK, so that would be a "feather-kid" I guess), or whatever.

I'm sorry about Speedboat.

You know, I am sometimes guilty of this myself. I try to remember, though, that some people just haven't had the opportunity, i.e., they're just waiting to be converted!

RIP, Speedboat.

Same here. The strange thing is that a lot of them are actually pretty nice people. My son told me it is because they were taught by the Church that animals have no souls so they are just things - like furniture for example.

She is certainly missing out, but it sounds like it is not a deliberate thing, and she is trying to empathise with you and your feelings for your cats. She is obviously a good person and a good friend, and it may be simply that the right cat (or dog or whatever) has not come along.

I once worked with a man, an avid hunter, who made a puzzling (and disturbing) statement. He said that they loved their little dog (I can't remember her name)....she was "one of the family." But "if she ever got sick, he'd put a bullet in her head." He went on to say that he couldn't see spending a bunch of money on vet bills and that people were too sentimental about animals! What kind of thinking is that?

How sad for her!!! It sounds like she wouldn't be opposed to having one. She would, no doubt, make a good mommy to one since she has been so sensitive about you and your cats. She should know what it's like to love a cat. And to be loved by one. Her life would be enriched times 100.

One of my very favorite quotes:

How empty are the lives of those who have never been blessed with the spirit of a little cat invading their hearts.... >^..^< ...

I feel bad for your friend. It sounds like she is a caring and empathetic person, and a wonderful friend who understands your love for your pets. It's odd (and rather sad) that she hasn't experienced the same type of unconditional love herself.

People say a lot of things. He may have changed his mind when the time came for his little dog. I have had vet bills for thirty years. I don't regret a cent I ever spent on my cats.
