Our attitude towards them. Many people treat pets as possessions. If this one thing changed, most shelters could go out of business.

If we look at them as the friends and companions they are, we will make the effort to understand their point of view. Dogs bark for a reason - we'd figure out what it was. Cats pee in odd places for a reason - we'd figured out why.

We'd put the effort into the friendship and not toss them outside - or at overcrowded shelters when we tired of them. Just MHO.

My pets are part of my family and are treated as such (in fact most of the time they are treated better than we treat ourselfs
)
But you are right there are people who treat them as possessions and will throw them out when the mood takes them, like they change the furniture.
When I first came to France pets had no rights what so ever and were regarded in law as a possession of the owner, for the owner to do what so ever he wished, that was 21 yeas ago and the law has changed so at least now they do have some rights. But there will always be those who take on a pet just on a whim and then throw it away when they tire of it or find it to much hard work.

I'm confused about this - there was a whole posting under the question when I answered this morning. What happened to it?

Hopefully society will change about our precious animals. Some people used to be thought of as one's property as well. It is just common sense to all of us that animals are breathing, feeling creatures that need the same things in life that we need. What makes humans better than animals?? Our ability to participate in wars? Our desire to kill one another, or molest our children? Or victimize our elderly? We have the power of choice and these are the things many of us choose to do. Oh yes, I'm proud of my species...at least as animal lovers we get to experience the wonderful lessons our animals are here to teach us. I'm sorry I just went on that rant. I hope I didn't offend anyone. It's a very sensitive subject to me. And one that needs to be discussed. You just saw my dark side

I saw this post this morning and pretty much assumed it was an advertising post. The links in the OP's signature gave it away. It's a common tactic on forums, they put links to the site or product they want to advertise and then pose some sort of forum related question in hopes that people will click on the links in their signatures. It's basically spam.

Oh - no wonder! It seemed like a pretty good question. I realize though, everyone here would have pretty much the same answer as I did!
