according to this chart: "defensive aggression". sometimes i see Daisy running with the tail like this (sometimes during a playful chase session with Penny (Daisy as chasee, Penny as chaser))

That chart doesn't work well with some of mine - I have some with ringed tails, and the happier the cat, the flatter to the back the tail is carried or in a couple of cases, the tighter the ring. The rest of ny barn cats, save for Skinny and the wandrer Gimpy, carry their tails curled forward in a semi-circle when they are pleased with life.

Nora has a hooked tail almost all of the time. I just think it means she is happy. She seems to be a pretty secure cat and doesn't really have much to be unsure of. She also only quivers her tail if you have food she thinks that she wants, she doesn't do it any other time.

yeah about the chart, it's not 100%. e.g., the one that says "amicable" is more like "exploratory" (in my opinion). penny's tail goes into a straight horizontal position when she's exploring

however, in daisy's case, the hooked tail interpretation happens to be right. she does the hook tail thing when she wants to be petted while being unsure if *I* am in the mood to pet her. penny in the past would do the hook tail as a young cat (late 2003), but not anymore

Sometime if a cat has been in a fight and been bitten, the tail will bend.

As far as the cat breed with a kink, that is usually associated with the Siamese cat, although it is a trait that they try to breed out. If your DSH has any Siamese, that might lead to a kinked tail.

Sophie's tail always goes into the "defensive aggression" position when she is in hyper-play mode. It kind of has that loose pony tail look to it. Anyone else's do the same thing?

When Mittens is "hunting" or her and Monster are chasing each other around, her tail does that. Its like down and the tip is flipped out and it wiggles back and forth really fast. When she is rubbing against my legs and purring, wanting lovinz, her tail is straight up and its hooked to the side like a shepherd's staff.

in all the years i've had glamorous, i've only ever seen her tail go really fluffy/big once or twice.. and that was either cos she was scared or angry i think, it was the cat next door attacking her through the catflap that did it.. and it's not something i like seeing, as my girls are normally so calm and relaxed.
