John McCain's heavily documented flip-flop

In 2006, John McCain stated that the military commanders are the one's that must have discretion on the status of "Don't ask, don't tell". And, that if senior military members were to come to him and tell him that DADT had to go, then he would work to repeal it. And, when he was trying to be President, he claimed that as soon as he were sworn in, he would direct the military to examine that policy.

Yet now, when the most senior man in military uniform AND the Secretary of Defense testify that it's time for DADT to go, ole' John popped a gasket with a straight up temper tantrum. Because of all the "expressive" comments on the videos, I can't link any of them here. But, searching YouTube for "McCain" with the search filtered for the last 24 hours will pull up numerous copies of the hearings. Quite revealing about Mr. McCain and the fact that he obviously is only concerned about keeping his job as a typical politician.

Liar, hypocrite, homophobic, panderer...or all of the above?

Who knows what the brass hats have told him privately?

But you really don't want to play this game, do you?

Are you suggesting that he is using clandestine information in political hearings? Hasn't "back door deals" been completely and totally condemned by conservatives on this very forum just in the last couple of weeks as improper to downright criminal? Besides, what reason would the military have for being "hush-hush" about it. Who's love is the Admiral in need of? That would be no one; he's an Admiral for a reason. It's the politicians that have to go wherever the votes take them, which is exactly what McCain is doing.

As I said, the videos of the proceedings are all over YouTube, including 2006 footage, his campaign footage, and the current footage. He proves himself to be nothing more than a career politician whose only true concern is remaining a career politician.

Did you see the Ad his wife came out with? In favor of same sex marriage and against Prop 8 in California? She looked beautiful, of course the picture was air brushed but she is a very attractive woman.

Plenty of flip flopping to go around in both parties, and McCain's temper is legendary. And what's so wrong with changing your mind about something, anyway? Except that with politicians, its usually done in an effort to maintain their job as opposed to any sudden deep convictions. There's a very good reason for the oxymoron "honest politician."

I see that Colin Powell has also changed his position on it. Remember, he was one of the commanders who advocated the position originally.

By the way, let me say up front I'm glad John McCain did not get elected. I have never liked him.

However, having been a ranking officer, I suspect he talks to service people most congressmen and senators could never reach.

I think we have to consider that if the reason for DADT was to help keep the peace between troops, we also have to consider that each year homosexuality is accepted a little more. This acceptance makes keeping the peace less of an issue and the reason behind DADT diminished.

So - I can see why people, including McCain have changed their minds.

The problem with that theory, of course, is that McCain went the other way, not in the more permissive way.

Just curious mrblanche, why you have never liked John McCain.

He has always been politically undependable and personally volatile.

I respect his service; I just don't think he makes a good Senator, let alone President.

For what it's worth, he's not alone in that assessment. I felt the same way about John Edwards, and, for that matter, Barack Obama.

That doesn't mean he would have been a bad President. It just means I wasn't willing to take the gamble on him.

But he is one of the very few, if not the only one that doesn't take earmarks or pork, the dude has integrity.

That much is true.

I didn't say he was bad; I said I didn't like him.
