Earlier tonight I stopped at a gas station to pick up a couple of items and put some gas in my car. I put $25.00 worth of gas in the car and went inside to grab a few snack items. I paid for the items and completely forgot about the gas. A couple of hours later it hit me that I forgot to mention the gas I put in the car. I went back to the gas station and explained what happened so I could make amends. The woman behind the counter said that she never had anyone who drove off come back to pay before. I'm an honest person, and I frequent this store on a regular basis so I made sure I did the right thing. It's kind of embarrassing, though.

That is so funny.I did the same thing 3 years ago! Bella was in the car and I was in a hurry. Stopped to get gas and a pop. Paid for the pop and drove off thinking I had forgotten something. I got all the way home before I remembered. Went back to take care of the purchase and felt stupid. `I chuckle about it now

I'm cashier in a restaurant, and we do have some who leave without paying. Usually it's deliberate, but there have been a few times that the next day a customer will come in carrying yesterdays check and say "I must have forgotten to pay yesterday." Don't be embarrassed to go back to the store, I can assure you we don't harbor ill feelings against those who were simply absent minded. It's a busy world, and stuff happens. I once got into a conversation with a cashier at the grocery store and we both forgot about paying, she had to chase me into the parking lot when the bag boy pointed it out to her!

Good for you!
I bet most gas stations don't see that kind of honesty now days. When I read the title of the thread, I thought you accidentally drove off with the nozle still attached to your car.
I had a friend who didn't do that, but the pump wouldn't shut off after she finished pumping her gas. Gas went all over her car, all over the parking lot, and actually made a trail into the street. They had to call the fire department.

I've done that, not intentionally, but it did happen. I was getting gas at a convenience store and when I went in to pay for the gas, I also grabbed some other items. I even told the clerk that I had had gas as well, but she never rang it up. I just thought she did, paid the bill, and left.

Well, I was driving down the road and this guy was behind me, flashing his lights and blowing the horn. I pulled over and got out of my car. He got out and asked me if I had paid for my gas. "Why yes, I'm sure I did!"

The clerk didn't charge me for the gas. I thought she did, paid the bill and left. Didn't think a thing of it. She was going to call the police!! Can you imagine! As soon as the guy talked to me, I thanked him, went immediately back to the store, and paid for the gas. But I also let her know that I was not amused. Accidents happen and I understand that. But to call the police?? Especially since I had been a customer for years and knew the clerks? And she was going to call the police? (She knew my phone number; she could've called me!)

I don't think I've been in that store since that episode...and that was years ago.

It's good to know that there are still some honest people out there.
A few weeks ago, my BF, Dana, went to get some gas and toilet paper, got to the cash and realized he forgot his wallet at home.
Luckily we only live about 5 minutes from the store, but he had to give the clerk all of his info before they would let him leave. He went home, got the wallet and went right back but he was SO embarrassed.

That's really wonderful of you. Working at a gas station before, it sucks to have drive offs. It definately shows the kind of person you are

The world would be so much better if more people were honest like you.

Be safe.

Here all the self service gas stations are pay in advance. It is very rare to find one that isn't.

When I used to pump my own gas I always used my credit card because that way I didn't have to go in to pay and then go back for change.

In my decline I now go to the one station in town that actually pumps gas for you. The elderly man that owns it always calls me "young lady" and sometimes gives me a candy with my receipt.

At Target a few years ago the cashier bagged an item (a tray of Oreo cookies) but must have accidentally not scanned it because later I noticed it wasn't on the receipt. I felt like I had stolen something, so I actually brought the cookies back into the store and paid for them. They must have thought I was some kind of loon.

.....and now I live across the street from Target's HQ. Not that it's relevant. I just never expected that to happen.

Well, I did the opposite awhile back. I paid for my gas and drove away! I glanced at my gas gage and saw that was on empty. I had to go inside and explain before I could pump my gas!

How nice of you

Here in Atlanta, the gas stations don't have the option to pump and then pay, you have to either pre pay or use your credit card at the pump...

That is funny.
Most gas stations I frequent, even on road trips, do not have that option. Prepay or a credit card is required to activate the pump.

I had sort of an experience like that...I pressed "credit" outside, and went throught the whole thing that I didn't want a car wash or a receipt, etc. etc. Then filled my tank and went. When I got home, the police were waiting for me and said I didn't pay. So I had to go back and pay. Possibly AGAIN, and I ALWAYS press that I want a receipt now!

I did that recently at the beauty shop. I had the check for $60 written out to pay. The girl went in the back to do something and in the meantime, I struck up a conversation with a woman I hadn't seen since high school. I left and went on to the grocery store. While I was there, I put my hand in my pocket and there was the check. I called her from the store and told her I would stop there on my way back home. She was shocked and didn't realize I hadn't paid her. I was embarrassed. I couldn't sleep at night if I discovered something I did like that and didn't make it right.

I'm actually slightly surprised at how many people have to pre-pay or use a credit card to pay for gas before they can pump! Must be a "small town farm kid" thing to find that odd.

I have almost driven off without paying, actually when I went in to pay once the cashier asked me if I had happened to look at the other person pumping's license plate - the drove off without paying.

That speaks volumes about someones character when they go back and do the right thing, even if it was an accident.
That was sweet of you to go back!

In Memphis, almost every single station around here makes you prepay. I've done that once before as well; it was at the end of a long day and I was soo scatterbrained! I paid for my drink and gas then got in my car and drove off without ever putting gas into my car!
I felt soo silly having to go back and explaine the situation. Thankfully, the same clerk was there and I realized it before I got too far away from the gas station. That was one day that I was really glad I had saved the reciept to show I prepaid!

Around and in Cincinnati it pretty much depends on the neighborhood and the gas station you go to on whether or not you have to pay before you can pump gas. The township I live in doesn't have much crime so you don't have to pay in advance. Some of the more higher crime neighborhoods don't give you the option and are pay in advance.
