Kitten NOT scratching!

Thread Starter
I have a 6 month old kitten who refuses to scratch our scratching post. Now he doesnt really scratch anything else but today my dad caught him doing the side of the couch. His mother uses the scratching post daily, even sometimes with him right beside her but it looks like he has not caught on yet.

Whenever we see him scratching something he shouldnt be we say "no!" and take him over to the scratching post and imitate scratching for him... But nothing seems to be working!!!

Anyone know of ways to get a kitten to start using a scratching post?

Maybe try to put some catnip on it to attract him.

Try different types of scratching surfaces. Some like carpet, some like sisal rope, some like cardboard. Some like the hanging kind and some like the ones you can sit on the floor and stand on. Try them all to find one your kitty likes and will use.

I suggest you try grabbing a plain, but wider, cardboard scratcher that sits on the floor. Depending on where purchased they cost around $12-15 and come with a little baggy of ok-ish quality catnip.

Many cats that don't like other surfaces will use the cardboard scratchers. Everyone of my 7 indoor cats will used them to some extent.

Another option is real wood - a cleaned up (don't bring in anything full of bugs) log. If the bark is on tight, even better.
