I found this thread and website a month ago when I was googling Profender and just wanted to sign up to add my voice. Mainly for those who came across to this thread (or other threads on other websites)

Nothing personal about anyone on this thread but as a general comment I find advising against using a medication that were given by a DOCTOR as irresponsible as giving medication to someone without being a doctor. Profender is a very popular dewormer, being used in many different countries. In my neighborhood alone all three vet clinics carry Profender and a pill for deworming, that's it, two options. I live in Istanbul where there are cats everywhere and people, like myself, treat stray cats too. So imagine how many cats get treated with Profender in my neighborhood alone. Such a popular medicine whether it's for animals or humans of course will cause side effects on some. The things we eat cause "side effects" sometimes too. If we were to think about human health, you know even aspirin causes side effects on some, even death would be possible as it is with ANYTHING because "if this and that and this happen at the same time, this would be fatal" while unlikely, is still possible when something is used by so many.

Using a spot on treatment isn't a case of convenience for the human as some seem to think. My cousin's cat throws up within the next 15 minutes of getting a dewormer pill, even when the pill was crashed, making the pill less likely to work. She's been using Profender instead for years now without a side effect as bad. My brother's cat on the other hand gives a bad reaction to spot on dewormers. His cat gets a pill instead. The same purpose of deworming, but different methods are the best for different cats (or for the same cat at different times.) Even doctors can't always tell what option would be the best for your cat without trying one and seeing how it goes. Of course it brings a risk but the thing is EVERYTHING in life is risky one way or the other. Do you see your cat's intestines or stomach after you give a pill? How are you sure it didn't cause a damage as severe/mild as cat losing hair on the spot on treatment spot without pain? Just because WE don't see a side effect does not mean there was none.

It's not my intention to promote Profender or a pill, as I said it depends on the cat and you will get the best advice from your vet. Of course get a second opinion, of course do your research as I did too. But I have anxiety disorder and I know how scary bad reviews can get for those of us who are extra nervous about all these. In fact I also got scared of Profender in the beginning enough to take my time to read more about it. Until the day I saw a worm hanging out of my cat's anus. That was so not "better." And I mean it for the cat. She was hospitalized for high bilirubin that turned out to be caused by her gallbladder a month, before she got any medicine. I am now convinced that was at least partially caused by worms as worms in all creatures doesn't allow the immune system to be as good as it normally would be, via stealing nutrition.

Finally, a vet once told me when something happens to an animal, the last "new" thing is usually blamed even after a doctor says it wasn't related and that animals usually have something 'different' in their lives frequently and that every animal dies or gets a health problem. So it's just coincidence a lot of times. That was one of the things that calmed me about trying medicines on my cat that was given by her vet. I thought about it and this week for example, she got a new treat. Last week when I ran out of her normal food, I got her a different wet food. Next week she will get her flea medicine. You get the point.

Best wishes to all and your cats.
