I went to see my surgeon for a follow up regarding my surgery in April 2009, on Wed. We decided that my left hand is as good as its going to get for now and to go ahead and book the surgery for my right hand.
Things usually take a while here.... elective surgeries are usually at least 4wks wait....on average 6-8wks.
I got a phone call on Friday, and due to a cancellation they had an opening Feb.9
I was shocked, and immediately panicked of course because I had planned on getting things done a little bit at a time.....over the next month or longer.... NOT cramming everything into 10 days.
The initial panic has subsided, and now I`m working on trying to get things done at a steady pace, but slow enough that I am not overdoing it.
I need to make some lists up so I don`t forget anything. I have one week from today, well technically, I have till next Monday to get things done.
My pre-op admission stuff is tomorrow....(they do it over the phone, then recheck things on the day I go in).
This time the surgery is on my right hand, which I am not looking forward to since I now know what recovery is like, as well as, with the first one I did not know what to expect for results.... now, after 10mos of recovery I know that it gives me more functionality, and very slightly less pain. But just the functionality (being able to open a jar, even tho it hurts, I CAN do it) is worth it. ( I had had my hopes set too high....in that I thought it would `fix me`so it was quite the disappointment.... but now I know, so that won`t happen again )
I`m right handed, so I`m doing a lot more prep work prior to next Tues. because I know how difficult it is.
Simple things like laying out clothes on my chest, rather than leaving them in the closet or dresser..... Making some meals up (since I eat different things than the rest of my family).....getting my snakes to a point that they can go 2-3wks without me having to worry about them (aside from Kendra checking their water)......making sure I have lightweight bottles of bathroom stuff in the shower....etc. etc.
Being that it is my dominant hand, In addition, my left is still not fully functional..... I know that it is going to be a long road ahead
and I will need to keep my eyes on the end result.
My family and I have already had `the talk` as we know what happens to me when I become unable to do basic tasks
So we`re prepared for the emotional rollar coaster ahead.
If ya`ll could spare some vibes, thoughts, whatever, for the surgery itself (that nothing goes wrong) and the strength to handle the recovery as best as I can, I sure would appreciate them, thank you.
PS: we already reminded the surgeon of the issues from last time (not enough freezing put in before he started operating, not enough sedation, and the issues with the post op meds.) and we will remind him again on the day off, because I really don`t wanna go thru that again.
I`m the first surgery that day, so we have to be there at 6:30am, operate hopefully by 8:30am, then home early afternoon if all goes well.
