On recommendations found in this forum I borrowed Homer's Odyssey by Gwen Cooper from the library.

At first I didn't think I was going to be able to read it. I started crying as I read the first sentence in the forward by the vet who saved this kitten's life after it was brought in by a couple who found him. I thought, good grief if I am going to sob through this entire book, maybe I better just forget it.

But I persevered, and ended up staying up until 3 a.m because I couldn't put it down. I got about half way through and then FORCED myself to turn off the light.

Today all I want to do is read it some more, but I will stay away from it as I have a busy day ahead.

But Wow. I mean...Wow.

Every one should read this book!

You sold me. I am going to try to find it.

I can't even read greating cards at the store, I always end up teary eyed. Especially the pet loss ones.

But I have been warned so I am prepared for Homer.

I watched an episode of the Simpson's where Homer mentions the Oddysey he rented on vacation once, and how he loved all the cup-holders

?? I don't get it? We're talking about a book about a blind (eyeless, actually) cat named Homer. A true story, it's laugh out loud funny, too.

Last night I got to the part about the break in, and where she talks about the deep rooted fear that Homer would get out, and be totally lost forever.

I understand that fear because I carry it, for my Tolly. Without his seizure medicine he would go into those horrific episodes, and they come every hour or more. He would get so disoriented and lost he would never be able to come home. He would die, alone and afraid. He did get out and away from me once, in the middle of the night when my door blew open.

I managed to keep it together while looking for him, but after I found him and brought him home, I had hysterics, and was afraid to leave my house for days afterward. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, is what it was.

So Gwen's experience and admission of her fear hit so close to home, because I do worry about Tolly in the same way, every second of every day, and after reading about it, I again relived the horror of that time.

at first glance I thought this thread was about Homer's THE Oddyesey, the ancient Greek classic and I was like cool I read that! But the book you are talking about sounds much better!

Homer the cat is named after Homer the Author and his book, (Homers life as a blind cat being an odyssey) and there is a quote from the book at the beginning of each chapter

I finished the book a few days a go, but it took a while for it to leave my system. I mean...I was living with Homer and the other two cats for the duration.....it was hard to come back to reality.

The part about 9/11 was so intense I sobbed through the entire chapter.

I did visit the author's blog, in the hopes of more news about Homer, but she is writing about dealing with CRF in one of the other cats (Vashti) and there are just too many entries to sort through and catch up, for me.

I think it's important to point out that Homer, the poet, was also blind.
