Hello all,

This is my first post here, I have read many of the other posts people have had, some that are related to what I am going through, but I wanted to ask, just to make sure.

I have a 9 month old that in the past day has become extremely lethargic and has not eaten and is barely drinking. He has been just laying on his stomach in the middle of the floor staring at the floor for most of today. The only thing I could get him to eat was some tuna as well as the water from the tuna can. I have an appointment tomorrow morning to take him in, but I am wondering if I should take him to an emergency vet tonight. He still seems interested in his toys, hell get all wide-eyed and interested, but his physical interaction with the toy is extremely limited, if at all. Most of what I have read people are saying he could just have a cold, but I just want to hear some other peoples advice on this situation.

Please list anything you think might be helpful to myself, and more importantly, Franklin. We would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

There's no place like home
Laying on their belly and staring at the floor is a sign of a very serious illness. I agree with the others - take him to the ER tonight.

Thanks so much for your responses. I just checked his pulse as well as his breathing rate and they both seem very rapid as well. I am calling the ER vet and taking him in right now. Again, thanks so much!

So I went to the ER vet and she was not sure what was wrong. They wanted to keep him overnight to keep him on oxygen while they xray his chest, his stomach/abdomen as well as blood work. I have to go pick him up at 7:30 tomorrow morning and take him to my regular vet because the emergency vet closes at 8am. Already I am in 900 bucks, plus whatever else my normal vet needs to do tomorrow. I just hope that this works and he is fine, Id rather be a completely broke college student with a healthy cat than a semi broke college student with a cat that has questionable health. I just hope they can give me a definite answer as to what happened and how I can prevent this in the future. Should be a fairly sleepless night without my buddy Franklin, send us some good vibes, we will need them, Thanks!

I will say an O2 tent saved my dogs life a couple years ago ...

Hey, well done getting Franklin in to the ER tonight. I didn't see you mention, has he been peeing normally? I always worry about urinary tract blockages with males, so it's something to mention to the vet if he isn't, as they will want to do a urinalysis.

Keep us updated!

Hope your cat will be fine. You did the right thing to take him to the doctor.

Great job getting him to the vet tonight. Like you said, better to be a totally broke college student with a healthy cat than to constantly have a kitty getting sick or just being kinda puny. Praying all goes well and they're able to figure out what's wrong with Franklin.

Thank you so much for the support, you guys really have an amazing community here!

So the vet called me back after they tested him. She said that his chest did not look normal and she was thinking it could be an allergic reaction to something, pneumonia, or very unlikely, but something with his heart. She said that they would know more when I pick him up in the morning so we will see. Also good to hear that O2 can be that effective in helping, thanks Sharky!

@ otto : He was peeing regularly up until he stopped eating/drinking, then his elimination was fairly infrequent. Which is something I told the vet, but she seemed to attribute it to his lack of intake.

Thanks everyone!

I am not sure if this helps you or not.
When my Meeko was 3 months old the er vet saved her.
She has a grade 2/3 heart murmur and is 9.5 years old now.
I would not have her if the er vet had not saved her.
Prayers he will be ok.
Did he ever have a cold or uri before this happened?
I wonder if it could be fip also.

So I picked him up this morning and took him over to my normal vet. His breathing was still very rapid and they still could not get him to eat. They said they are thinking that Feline Asthma is most likely, which is common among cats here in Colorado. He will be there all day today on O2 and she said they were going to start giving him steroids to see if it was for sure asthma. When she was listening to her chest she was saying that there was a very small chance it could be a heart defect and the steroids could exacerbate the problem. So I told her to go ahead with the steroids so we can at least find out something and not just sit statically, doing nothing.

mews2much - That does help, anything positive definitely helps. Hopefully it is not FIP. But if it is I would at least know what it is and be able to give him the best life he could have.

Again, thanks for the vibes for Franklin, and comments, really helps to hear people that went through a similar situation. Ill keep you guys updated when I hear more.

I have a almost 18 year old cat with asthma.
I can help you if it is asthma.
Coco has a inhaler for her asthma because the steroid shots made her get other problems.
Did they take xrays?
That would show if it is Asthma.
Is he on pred pills or is he getting the Depo Medrol shot.

for you and Franklin - and bless you for taking such good care of him. Prayers that they can get a definitive diagnosis and can fix him up....but he's so lucky to have found such a loving home.
