Hi all, well I have taken a bit of break off here for a few days, just had alot going on with dh's grandad being diagnosed with lung cancer, I just needed a bit of time to et my head round things as I took it hard when his gran passed away in November. Well his grandad has scan on friday and results next tuesday but he has decided either way he doesn't want to live without his wife anymore which I can understand in a way, we will just have to wait and see what the outcome is but I have sort of come to terms with it in a way-we need to respect his wishes either way.
Anyway moving on I posted in December I think it was that I thought my lymph node in my neck was swollen, I rung up my fab (NOT) docs and he didn't see me just sent me for a blood test, basically for a full blood count, which I am told would tell if I had anything serious, it came back clear and I just put it down to stress at the time. Well, I have been ok but for the last week or so it has really got big again and I have been feeling really tired, just really run down, I finally phoned the docs this morning and got in to see a lovely doctor
I tell you I have been worried sick that I have had something serious even though I had a blood test. Well the doc examined my neck and announced that infact it is my thyroid that is swollen and the one on the other side is aswell, nothing to do with my lymph gland and that I should have been seen ages ago. He wants me to have a blood test for my thyroid and a scan just to see what is there, he assured me that he thought it was nothing really serious and if it was it definetely would have shown up in my white blood cell count (can anyone tell me if this is definetely true as I am such a worrier and still a bit worried). He said that its swollen as it has been left untreated for so long and if it is what he thinks this would explain all my other symptoms aswell. Gosh I am so relieved but I phoned my dad and he although pleased gave me a bit of a ticking off as he has been nagging me for ages to get my thyroid checked as I have always struggled with my weight and my nan has an underactive thyroid and all my symptoms are similar to hers-maybe next time I will listen I just have been scared with recent events.
Sorry I just needed to get this off my chest and I also wondered if anyone else has thyroid problems as I don't really know much. Thanks.xx

How odd. TSH should have been part of your normal blood work. Anytime anyone feels generally run down a lot of doctors will add it on there since it's a simple test. Either the other doc didn't include it or used old lab values.

There are people here with it. http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ Explains tests and what is wrong with some of them - including how some labs are greatly behind the accepted standard levels.

Ask for your vitamin D levels to be checked, too.

For some reason I was only checked for liver and kidney function and full blood count? I am fed up of the aches and pains, I have been reading on the net that if I have hypothyroidism then I could possibly have fibromyalgia and this would explain my hip, back, neck and all the other pains I have, my nan also has this. The blood test that I am going for tomorrow is just for my thyroid, my doctors aren't the best unfortunately. I am just glad I have got some kind of an answer atlast and although its not brill it isn't the end of the world but I will be putting a complaint in about not being seen in December as I though all lumps really should be checked out and I could have had an answer by now. Thankyou and thankyou for the link. x

So you didn't even have your electrolytes checked, either?
I hope you can get a real doctor working with you. Move forward with treating the thyroid and any possible associated deficiencies before you worry too much about fibromyalgia, with luck you'll start feeling better.

That things start looking up for you soon.

Your aches and pains could also be attributed to low thyroid. Before I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (I am hypothyroid, too), I woke up each morning feeling like I had played several games of football the night before... sore and like I'd been beat up.

The thyroid supplement helped everything. Make sure the doc checks your actual thyroid levels, too, not just TSH, and ask for "real" or desiccated thyroid instead of synthetic - it's MUCH better. If you have to have synthetic ask for prescriptions for both T3 and T4; otherwise you will probably get only synthetic T4.

You will feel much better after getting a more normal level of thyroid hormone in your body!

Big Pharm and FDA has stopped production on it (at least Armour) in the US. Despite the fact that is has been used for a very long time they're claiming it's a new and untested drug! So there is a shortage with chance of no more of that soon.

Oh, no, I do remember my sister saying something about that months ago. It's still a problem getting desiccated? I don't get it...

Ruthyb if I were you, I'd ask for synthetic T3 in addition to T4, believe one is called cytomel, and you should start out on a really low dosage.

I'm sorry, I don't know much about tyroids. My sister has symptoms of both over active and underactive. The docs are baffled. Other then that, I know nothing more.

I wanted to post to say sorry for the recent turn of events in your family. My mom made the decision to go on morphine when she had cancer and was in so much pain she didn't want to take it anymore. I was devastated, but I respected her wishes, and told her that I had no call what so ever in the matter, as she was the one in pain.

Recently my stepmom's cousin went off dialisis and chemo and opted to pass away. I understood, since my mom made the same decision (she was allergic to morphine and knew it would kill her)

I feel for you, and I think it's good to respect his decision like you said. Only he knows how he feels and his quality of life.
As hard as loosing him may be, he will be happy, healthy, and young again in everyones hearts.

I hope everything turns out well with your thyroid, and that it hasn't gone too long.

Be safe.

Thankyou very much, we really have had it hard lately, I just hope nothing else is lurking round the corner. Dh's grandad is really not well, I think its he is basically just giving up but he wants to be reunited with Barbara, my mil is just inconsolable and its hard to know what to say to her at all.I just can't believe that all this could happen to one family, I just know that I want to get myself better.
I have just phoned my docs as I have really bad back pain and my neck feels really uncomfortable and I just feel so yuck, wish I could go back to bed but with 3 kids to look after its not that simple
I was told by the original doctor that yes aching and feeling yuk is a symptom, well I have just been put through to talk to another doctor and he said they are not symptoms and he thinks I have "picked something up". I could cry, why am I feeling so rubbish and why are two doctors telling me different? I just want answers but the good news is he is ringing the hosp and getting my bloods hurried, he said should have the results tomorrow. x

The creator never gives us more then we can handle, and it always makes us stronger. It's so hard to loose a loved one.

For the next few years after my mom passed away I lost 2 grandmas, 2 uncles, a few friends... There was a lot of heartache, hurt and asking why. Luckily we all made it through it all
Didn't seem like we would at the time, it is so hard to see the nice weather through the dark storm clouds, but it's there.

I hope that the drs get their acts together soon and give you straight answers and the same answers. I can't imagine how it would feel to in your position with your health, and worry for a loved one who has chosen to not live anymore. On the good side, I bet he's had a long and good life
The hardest part it to NOT MOURN the person before they die, it makes it hard on them. Plus it taints the memories you have left to make while they are still around (learned that with my mom.) Try to keep the mind set when you are with him that he is fine, everything is good, and it will help to make all the time with him as great as possible (not that you don't already know all this, I just like to babble on and pretend to know what I am talking about
)

Be safe and strong
you and your family are in my thoughts.
