Hi,
I have a male Burmese who is roughly one year old. We got him at 6 weeks, and did lots of training (I train dogs, so the cat got the same treatment pups do, lol) and socialization with him. We've always had lots of people coming and going and he was an extremely friendly, affectionate, outgoing and sociable kitten. He was never aggressive in any way. We had him neutered a few months ago. He really was not comfortable with the vet or the environment there at all. He was very aggressive toward her and attacked her several times. After the surgery we brought him home, and he seemed to be ok. However, he has never recovered his former attitude toward people other than me and my boyfriend who he lives with. He is perfectly wonderful toward us, never any hint of aggression. However, with anyone else, including people who have been around weekly for his entire life he is very aggressive.
There appears to be two types to his aggression. With some people, he will come over and be perfectly fine, rubbing up against them, but then change his mind(without them touching him at all) and start meowing loudly and hissing. In the other cases he will freak out at people who walk by him. He then chases them and attacks.
I really don't understand this behavior, or how to fix it. I don't know what type of aggression it is. He has always been a very confident cat, never timid at all. He is healthy and happy in general.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I am going to purchase a feliway diffuser, but I really don't know if it will make a difference.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Lena.
