Holland has a dental procedure tomorrow so I can't feed her after 10 tonight. I just called to her that she only has one hour left to eat so if she wants it she better get it now. She promptly ran into the kitchen and is eating as I type. It's not coincidence, my kitty is just really smart.

Of course you are! I always bawl when I have to leave a kitty at the vet. It's awful!

I get to pick her up in an hour and a half. What a long day this has been. She had to have several teeth extracted, vet said she did fine with the anesthetic and came out of it nicely. I miss my baby!!!

She's going to feel SO much better, after she heals. You'll be amazed at the difference in her!

Ask about pain meds. NOT metacam.

Otto, after reading your post I went and checked my paperwork... when I took her in for her annual two weeks ago (she had recently lost a tooth at this point, which started the whole dental snowball rolling) they sent me home with 3 oral doses of Metacam for her pain. She didn't have any adverse reactions that I noticed, what is wrong with Metacam? I don't want to give her any more if there is a danger to her!!

Hope all goes well with your cat. I have never been brave enough to do dental stuff on my cats. On my Muffin once, I was going to, but when the vet did his bloodwork, one of his liver enzymes was elevated. The dr. rechecked it in two weeks and it was still the same so he wouldn't put him out.

Thanks, blueeyedgirl. She's got stomatitis, so it was only a matter of time before I had to get her teeth removed. I know cats are good at hiding their pain, but when her vet showed me her mouth at her checkup two weeks ago I couldn't believe how red and swollen her gums were, poor little girl. I cried when I saw her mouth. I cried this morning when they asked me if I wanted to sign the "do not resuscitate" form. Heck, I've been crying off and on all day. I know she will feel better once she's healed, and I won't have to worry about teeth problems anymore!

I can't wait to pick her up this evening. The house seems empty without her...

Metacam has caused acute kidney failure in cats. Many vets prescribe it for cats now, but I am one of those who are against metacam use in cats, there are other much safer pain medications available. Vets like metacam because it only has to be given (should only be given) once every other day, so for long term use it is "easier" for the human to administer.

Buprenex, torbogesic, tramadol, all have their side affects but are safer for short term pain management, in my opinion.

Presumably your vet did blood work before prescribing the metacam (and presurgery). Obviously Holland has not had acute kidney failure from using it, since she is fine!
But it happens, too often for my comfort, anyway.

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you, but I think people should be aware of what metacam can do.

I have requested "NO METACAM" written on all my cats charts, in big red letters. Just so there will never be any mistake.

That's interesting, Otto. The vet gave me 3 oral doses of metacam, and instructed me to give her one dose a day for 3 days, and she said that the painkiller would work for a week and a half. I thought it was odd to have three consecutive doses work for that long, but I don't know enough to question Holland's doctor. Thanks for the info!

Holland is home!

She's still a little "out of it" and she's pawing at her mouth no doubt wondering where her teeth went, but I'm glad she's home. Although I haven't been able to coax her onto my lap yet, she only hid out under the bed for about 5 minutes when we got home. She doesn't want to be held, but she has been loving having her head rubbed.

Here is a good article written by Dr Marie (I think she posts here actually). It's objective and well written.

http://is-it-true-that.askavetquesti...am-kills-cats/

There is a website called www.metacamkills.com.

here is the latest posting dated 1/5/10:

Hi Dave
I'm a small animal veterinarian in Arizona and I personally know of three cases where cats died as a result of metacam use. I NEVER use metacam in cats, and warn all my clients about it. When I dispense it for dogs, I ALWAYS put a warning label on the bottle, "NOT FOR USE IN CATS."

You're welcome to contact me if you wish;
Metacam is deadly in cats and I am not afraid to tell people this. Thanks!

Meredith Beard, DVM
this is me, otto, talking again......No vet should prescribe metacam for a cat without making sure the cat's humans understand the risks, and how to use the medicine.

In addition, metacam should never be prescribed unless blood work has been done.
