terribly inexpirienced cat

hi everyone

I'm writting to you from south america. the last two years I have been breeding sacred birmans with great success. unfortunately the cat that we usually worked with got very sick and is not longer authorized for breeding.
since sacred birmans are a controlled breed, there are very little possibilities for a potencial cat. after a long search it seems that we finally found the perfect match.
unfortunately this new male is a first time stud and has no clue what to do.
He was approved by the association because of his great pedigree.
but what do I do now? how does he learn what to do? do I have to help in any way? can anyone help me please, I have now idea what I should do.
pleas help.
thank you
monty

Its best to breed a very experienced queen with a nice personality to him to learn. It may take some time. I'm assuming you are sending your queen to this male. Be prepared for several tries. The owner of the stud should be the one to help him out. Some males will allow you to help guide them, some don't.

I had a Cornish Rex queen that actually loved to be bred by males - she never attacked them and actually "encouraged" them to breed her. She was a wonderful teacher and would be great for maiden studs! You rarely find a female like that.

Good luck and don't give up on him - just be patient.

After my last male Devon (now fixed) didn't want to breed more than the two times, we decided he wasn't up to the task at hand.

My new Sphynx boy, well lets just say, he learned with great proficiency. He just turned a year old a couple weeks ago, but he's got it down pat. He's after the girls before we know they're in heat. He's the one who clues us in LOL

Now, it depends on his age. I would definitely allow him several tries before he is successful.

There are several variations with studs who seemingly dont have any clue.

First of course, they may be too young...

Next good advice is to let his first female be experienced and or friendly...

Our younger stud was very lucky with his first wife, who also was inexperienced. But she did simply layed herself down ready... So after he somehow realized it was not enough to friendly lick her in the ear, it took roughly only about a 15 minutes before he catched the main principles...

Otherwise next standard advice. If they are friendly / tolerate each other, let them be together in a rather small room several days. Dont stress them. Let there not be any disturbing sounds or the like.
With some luck he will catch the idea after a couple or three days...

If he is unsecure, it is easiest to have the female visit him. If HE visits the female, let him adapt to the room say 24 hours before they meet.

The trap is to let them be together a couple of hours and think it is enough. With a very experienced pair it may be enough, but never ever count on it. Unexperienced may need nearer a week.
Unexperienced or very friendly who always courts the ladies till she voluntarily lay down herself... Like our older always did

Next advice is to try several times (several days each visit). Say, they are a little unfriendly / reserved. After several times they meet, they get pals - and suddenly it is easier for the female to submit herself, and easier for the male to do something more active....

Good luck!

hi everybody
thank you for all your good advice.
like you said, normally we bring our ladies to the studs, but this time there was a complication with the owner of the stud and that's why he brought him to us. just for this once. the stud is very friendly and sweet, he even let me help him get on top, while my cat waited patiently. he tried it then without me and I was starting to get very happy but then my cat startet to make that special sound (I don't know in english) and jack got scared and ran away. after that, he wouldn't go near zina anymore.
then she got angry and started to chase him and bite him in the legs. after that they were playing-fighting. now they're just running around in the house.
I called the lady from the association who made all the contacts and she adviced me to keep them separated during the day and to let them together only during the nights. she said that so they would miss each other.
well I must say, I have never heard of that.
have you?
at least he will be staying here as long as it needs, thats good news, right?
so what do you think?

So he was surely inside her. Possibly it was also a successful intercourse.

I shall write more later,

@StefanZ; that's what my husband said, but it wasn't the same sound when she actually has intercourse. it was more a growl than it was the normal
"cry" if you understand.
plus she didn't turn around and tried to hit him like she normaly does.
thing is that since yesterday night it seems that she is no longer in heat.

could it be over, even though they didn't have successful intercourse.
you know, just because he took too long?
what do you think?

Its possible it took. My first breeding Cornish Rex was one that had was silent after she was bred........I'm not kidding. She was a big girl and apparently it didn't hurt her as much. The breeder was not sure if she was bred as she never had a female be silent.

When I took her to another breeder to use their stud, I had to tell them she was a silent girl. But she gave us several wonderful litters and never needed additional breedings to "take".

I've not heard "the scream of ecstasy" out of any of my bred females. It has always been a growl..in the last couple years at least. It confuses a person when you know what sound they NORMALLY make when bred. But I've been surprised more than once with the growl actually being that they were in fact penetrated.

Good luck, I hope the breeding took for you!!

The females do often have a low, brumming sound shortly before the stud is done. Usually culming in this cry out and attack try on the stud. (usually, they not always cry out - the affair can be silent too).

Oh what I laughed when our very unexperienced younger male flew off his first wife at his first intercourse, and jumped out for life! HOW could he know she would attack him?? He had never experienced this before... And they were friendly to each other...
Probably this brumming sound is by itself threatening.

An intercourse by itself doesnt need to end the heat. Thus, you must watch out on the female after she has returned from the stud, not letting any tomcats,
near her till you are entirely sure the heat is over. Not even her own brother!

But on the other side. A try to intercourse CAN stop the heat. Thus I have heard about a working method of stopping heat (or at least - easing it up) by using a neutered tomcat, who knows what to do and how. (perhaps a friendly ex stud, or late neutered friendly tomcat).

About letting him out and let him run around the house.
It may be good to let him rest a little.

But as a rule of thumb. If they are friendly to each others, better to keep them together in the same room. It helps them to remember they are there for some especial purpose, and not being just friends with each other....

Last. IF they had intercourse. Is this done?

Perhaps, but you cant know. The usual recommendation is to have them have at least several times. Although there ARE cases when once is enough for a nice, sound litter...

Good luck!

hi everyone

so now it's official, our princes zina is no longer in heat.
yesterday we had to return the stud to it's owner. the good news is that if she didn't take, we can have the stud again and for free!
since it's in everyones interest that this stud gets his first litter and we have a very good pedigree, we all agreed to try until it happens. if not with zina then maybe with one of our other ladies.
the results should be very promising

so now we do the waiting game

I want to thank you all for your help and kind words.
and if you are interested I can keep you posted on how things are going.

so thanks again for everything
bye you guys
