myopathy in hind quarters

What's wrong with Jake?

1. Name: Jake. Age: 9. Spayed when bought from breeder nine years ago.

2. General health: Very good. Never been sick. Appetite is uniform, but slightly diminished.

Evacuations are firm and regular.

Urination seems normal.

He is an outdoor cat to the extent that I walk him on a leash. He is permitted to be left outside on a leash. For a month, he has not wished to be walked or let out on leash.

Has lost some weight; perhaps a pound plus. Don’t know his general weight. Would guess weight to be eight to nine pounds.

Jake is only animal in house.

3. Symptoms:

Unnaturally paces around the house for five to ten minutes, crying softly in low voice; will then sleep for an hour.

Cries two or three times, softly in a low voice while lying down, while sleeping.

Occasional slight, muffled single sneeze; drop or two of fluid.

Myopathy: mainly in hind quarters. Onset two/three weeks.

1. Shows slight protrusion of scapula when weight is placed on front legs.
2. Sometimes assumes a crouched, wide stance of rear legs.
3. Does not yet show limp in walk.
4. General lethargy.

While sleeping against my arm a month ago, I felt one to two slight jerks. These occurred every ten seconds or so. These have now gone.

Diminished jumping ability. Ordinarily Jake could jump to the kitchen counter and again to the top of refrigerator where he prefers to eat. Now he seems limited to a jump onto a chair. Even this jump is leaving him. The last two days he prefers to eat on floor.

Gentle pressure on hind quarters elicits nominal discomfort.

Has rarely drunk water. Is normal habit.

Prefers only wet food: mixed grill. Occasionally will eat ocean white fish.

Has never been a cat that likes to rub around standing person’s legs. Recently, he rubs some, is more underfoot. When about to be fed, he would walk at a trot; now he walks slowly.

Fur seems normal in color and texture. Is combed daily.

Use Advantage flea suppressor once or twice a year. Have never noticed any adverse reaction.

We are not vets here and cannot render a diagnosis, however, if any of my cats were exhibiting your boy's symptoms, I'd get him to the Vet immediately!

Good luck!

I'm in complete agreement. We'd be off to the vet ASAP. I'm not familiar with these symptoms, but it could be one of soooooo many things. Stroke, bacterial infection, neurological problem.... only a vet is going to be able to tell you what he needs.

for your baby.

If finances are the problem, look into Care Credit if you're in the US. If you're in the UK, call a local RSPCA to ask about low-cost care. Otherwise, just talk to your vet about making payments over time, or see if you have anything you can sell to help make the payment.
