I know that fish is not good for cats prone to crystals, but would fish oil be okay?

My MIL's cat has been having major problems with stones and crystals for the last 6 months. The vet is now talking surgery because his urethra was damaged from a sizable stone. I've finally convinced her to change his diet (he was on cheap 100% dry before). She's going to do 12 weeks on the c/d to start but he won't touch it. I was trying to think of smelly things to incise him to eat and though fish oil may not contain the same minerals as the meat, but I can't seem to find this information by googling. Does anybody know?

Technically fish oil should be 100% fat... the issue is modern manufactuering allows for less than 100% purity... MOST fish oils are fine , but to get the smell you likely will have some protein or mineral in it ... See the molecularly distilled have little to no smell but the oil is pure
