Since so much has happened including 911, bomb scares, accidents, paying for luggage and being scanned so much more, do you now have a fear of flying. I havenâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t traveled by plane since the 80â€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s and donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t plan on getting on one again. The bomb scare is just way to high for me. How do you feel about it.

The last time I was on a plane was 2002. I might try a train trip the next time I travel, but the bad stuff can happen anywhere.

You are safer on the airplane than you are at home in bed, at least on domestic flights in the U.S. That may not be much of a comfort, but there it is.

And you are MANY times safer on the plane than you are in your car going to the airport.

I've never been afraid of flying and I don't intend to start now. Bad things can happen anywhere, and if we allowed speculation about where that might be to govern our movements, we'd never go anywhere. Life's too short.

The last time I traveled by plane was on September 11, 2002. I was in the Denver airport, waiting to board the plane, when an announcement was made on the overhead paging system at 8:46 am, requesting a minute of silence for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It was so eerie, the total silence in such a busy and noisy airport. I observed many people wiping their eyes, and making a sign of the cross. I have to admit, I was also moved to tears.

I will be traveling to Texas on Wednesday, for a seminar. I'm more worried about de-icing the plane in Detroit, and flying in winter weather, than I am about terrorists. I'm also doing a lot of grumbling right now, as I try to pack up some toiletries...trying to figure out what I can take on in my carry-on luggage, and what needs to go in my checked bag.

I agree with mrblanche. I also wanna add that being scared is letting them win. I fly at least once a year.

I've only been on an airplane once and LOVED it. I'd do it again. As said previously, dangerous things can happen anywhere, anytime.

I don't have any fear of flying, just loathing. Long lines at security; Having to make sure that, God forbid, I didn't accidentally pack fingernail clippers or a pair of tweezers in my carry on bag; Flight schedules that always seem to make me choose between having a 5 hour layover or a mad sprint between flights; Tiny seats that get a fraction of an inch smaller every year so the company can make more money; $3 for a tiny bag with 6 peanuts in it; And then the very real possibility my luggage is missing when you get to the other end. It's probably not as bad for people who fly a lot since they've learned a lot of tricks for making the process more bearable, but as someone who only flies once or twice a year it seems I have to relearn everything each time I do it.

I loathe flying, and it has nothing to do with bomb scares, etc.....it has more to do with getting airsick. I have flown 3 round trips and the first one was unpleasant, the second one, I was queasy and the last one, well, let's just say it's a good thing I didn't eat before getting on the plane. Add the abominable wait that passes for security to a proclivity for getting airsick, and I will not be flying again.

jamasmom - do try train travel - it is so calm, relaxing and civilised. You get real meals, not some warmed over insta-slop, real coffee and real waiters who take real orders at real tables, not some bored attendant banging down insta-slop on a tray attached to the next seat. If you go any distance, you can even have a proper bed to sleep on so you dom't walk around like Quasimodo after a sleep. The seating is opulant and roomy compared to airline seating, and trains don't require you to wear seatbelts on departure or on arrival. AND best - the aisle to the washroom is wide enough to walk down, once you get the hang of the railcar sway. I love train travel, and if we still had trains here, I would travel more. My dream is to get back to Banff and take the train tour from there to Field, through the Spiral Tunnels - incerdible scenery, so rich in history. Only thing that would make the trip perfect is if they still did it with steam
Oh yeah, I would LOVE to ride in the cab of a steam locomotive.

I love to fly and have no hesitation doing so. What annoys me is that the airlines are now charging to check your luggage. I wouldn't mind paying for an additional bag or an extra heavy bag, but I hate paying for the first one. If airlines were more open about what they charge at the time you are searching for cheap fairs, you could factor that into the cost of the ticket. But they don't, and it annoys me.

So my answer will be: I don't know. I'm weird, I know. I've just never gotten a chance to fly, and ironically I now live 15 minutes away from the biggest airport in this country. I'd like to try though and I will as soon as I get an oppoturnity to do so.

I feel the exact same way. I hate flying, and well for domestic flights it is not a big deal but going overseas is a nightmare, first there are the long lines at security which is irritating, but then sitting in a seat that is made of the hardest most uncomfortable material I've ever seen (at least economy class does) for 8-10 hours is even less fun..It just feels like it's never going to end, one annoying irritating event after another after another after another...

I fly overseas once a year, and I've never felt any fear for my safety but I absolutely hate it. Usually even if it's for vacation, from the time I get to the airport to the time I get to my destination, I already just want to be home and curse the day I got the crazy idea to go on vacation.

I hate flying, but I will still fly if I have to.

2 years ago, we went to Florida, and we had to fly. I had a near panic attack while the plane was taking off. That last time I had flown before that was over 10 years ago, so I was terrified. We will be going back to Florida in June for our honeymoon, and we're flying again. Hopefully I won't have the same reaction; as long as FH is by my side, I should be fine.

For me, it's a control issue. If something goes wrong, I have no control over what the outcome will be, most of the time. That's the part that scares me.

I've done a lot of flying in my life, and I've never loved nor hated it. Terrorist threats are not what would prevent me from flying - in fact, plane hijackings used to be an almost daily occurance in the 70s.
No - fllying is MUCH safer today.

We can't fly now because of Gary - they don't pressurize the cabins enough. I would if I had to - but I came to hate having to fly (not flying itself) because it is SUCH a hassle!

However, I have flown on private planes, and that is the way to go.
Go to airport, get on plane, wait for runway clearance, go.

Oh, yeah! My dad's a private pilot, so I'm really spoiled by that. Whenever we go to see relatives we fly there. Knoxville to Peachtree City (south of Atlanta) in 90 minutes or less. It would be 5 hours by car and probably longer than that by commercial airliner. It is a regional thing though. It's best for trips that would take between about 2-18 hours by car. Shorter than that and it's faster to drive. Longer and the commercial flight is faster.

Being a cat judge - flying is part of the job. I fly on average about 10 return trips a year. Some of the flights are just 20 minutes one way. Since NZ is mainly two islands it's easy to fly between the two. Getting a $60 return flight (45 min flight) sure beats sitting in the car for 10 hours driving.

I've been to Australia three times and in a few days I'll be off for a fourth time!
