I like that columnist; she is often a voice of reason when debates about animal rescue/animal welfare get heated.

I read about the Toledo animal control issue last year. IIIRC, the city newspaper was instrumental in getting the city to do something about that situation.

Interesting article, but I think they could have chosen a better example case. I know some are going to disagree with me here and advocate that every animal should be saved, but here is my opinion not knowing the details of the case beyond the article.

While there is a good argument for letting reptutable rescue groups remove animals who are healthy and not agressive out of AC facilites to care for them and place them (like the not so pretty cats), I'm not sure the pit bull they were talking about should have been placed.

Given the large numbers of abandoned and abused animals out there I think perhaps they should've stopped and considered whether it was in the animal's best interests to be put through all that surgery or humanely PTS when the case was first reported. Money raised in Oreo's name could have helped dozens of dogs and cats instead of one dog whose recovery and adoptablility was uncertain from the get go.

Man is this EVER true!!!

The guy in Toledo - by all accounts was a nightmare for the animals there! And I have seen all kinds of postings about Dallas, NC (Gaston County) through a Maine Coon rescue group on Yahoo!!

Pass this article around!
My husband and I are the founders of a cat rescue in NC, we have pulled cats and kittens from this shelter (Gaston) as well as taken ones that were pulled from there on several occasions. This is a horrible horrible shelter! They use completely inhumane forms of euthanasia (heartstick and gas chamber)

This shelter is getting a lot of negative attention and animal lovers from everywhere are working hard to change things for the animals there.

Fantastic article!!

Its great that something's being done to try and change the sad sad fate of animals who now don't get a chance beyond these shelters. Thanks for sharing !

I sometimes track a group called HelpSaveOne... they pulled dogs and cats from there. They are based in Mass. I have also been in touch with a local group - couple of women there - who are working to pull animals and change things. You may know them. I have their emails ...I can PM you if you'd like.
