This is horrible

There is no way I could not give up morning coffee.

I hope you can find a way to keep your coffee and still be healthy.

Last weekend we had a bad stomach bug go through my work, 6 of us were sick within a 4 hour period overnight on Friday. It hit me hard b/c I have Addison's Disease, so I ended up in the hospital needing an iv. Whatever is going around is TERRIBLE.

Sorry you weren't feeling well, but those 15 days will go by fast. Nobody told me to skip coffee or anything, and since I have been back to work (back on Wed, got sick Friday night) I have been drinking my daily cup of coffee in the morning and have had no ill effects. I hope you survive!

Feel better Rigel!

I avoid caffeine because of both my insomnia and because I get migraines. I will say that I was having MASSIVE amounts of caffeine some days while I was in school though. 2 No-Doze pills at 6AM to wake up, a quadruple espresso at Starbucks on the way to school, another quadruple espresso around noon, and maybe a single shot around 2 pm if needed. I can't tell you how many times I did that. Too many. If I'd do it for a week solid and stop, I got horrible withdrawal symptoms. Worse than when I quit smoking.

A while back in undergrad I used Provigil instead with success. I couldn't get a prescription in the twin cities though, hence my problem. I've since gotten a prescription for Nuvigil which is basically controlled release Provigil. You guys should consider it as an alternative to caffeine if your doctor is ok with it. With it, I have no need for caffeine to stay alert. 250mg when I wake up is all I need for the whole day because it's controlled release.

The only problem is that it's a nightmare to get insurance to pay for it and it's incredibly expensive without insurance. However, if you can swing it insurance-wise, and constantly need caffeine to stay alert like I did, maybe ask your doc about either Provigil or Nuvigil. I was told by my doc that it's less likely than caffeine to cause long term damage.

(disclaimer - I'm not a doctor. I don't play one on TV. I don't even own a labcoat. Ask your doctor who is well versed with your medical history about any meds you read about on the 'net. Nuvigil and Provigil can cause some bizarre and serious side effects, like anxiety, insomnia, and cataplexy on the less severe end of those serious side effects and toxic epidermal necrolysis (blisters pop up all over you and eventually you're covered in blisters), DRESS syndrome (massive rash all over), and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (your epidermis separates from your dermis) and more on the seriously severe end so - just letting you know. I only know about these because I looked into them after being prescribed Nuvigil.) Other than that, it's great.

Fair enough. Those severe side effects do sound scary. I looked online and I found yet another - Erythema multiforme - which is another skin rash type condition, but one that isn't even understood as to why it happens. It can be fatal if severe enough to affect the mucous membranes. I also left out things like "sudden thoughts of suicide" (one patient in a study actually tried to follow through with the thought not realizing it was a side effect but fortunately survived). I also left out nervousness, tremors, palpitations, sleep disturbances, nausea, diarrhea, confusion, aggressiveness, irritability, depression, paresthesias, hallucinations, delusions (those last two are why it's a schedule IV controlled substance), etc. etc. It can cause some bad stuff. It's side effects are a lot more scary and horrific than more commonly prescribed meds obviously. With that said, I took provigil for years and never had any side effects other than nausea if I took it on an empty stomach, but that would go away once I ate something.

Provigil is currently used by the U.S. military, namely the U.S. Air Force and is being evaluated for use by other branches of the military and foreign militaries to combat fatigue from inadequate sleep or sleep deprivation. It is also in use on the Internation Space Station by astronauts to increase performance when fatigued, and more importantly to help combat the effects of circadian rhythm disruption (because they have no sunrise and sunset and are only exposed for the most part to artificial light).

Nuvigil right now is in the process of getting certified by the FDA as the first drug approved to treat jet-lag.

So, the conclusion obviously is, these two meds, Provigil and Nuvigil, can have serious side effects and a well-trained and educated doctor (not all doctors are created equal) should definitely be fully involved if somebody is considering taking it. However, when it works, it really works and allows me live caffeine free without getting sleepy, even when I've gotten poor sleep or no sleep.

To me, it's a miracle drug, on my short personal list of miracle drugs which also includes ondansetron (Zofran) - my absolute favorite miracle drug, fenofibrate (Tricor), and pretty much any statin (I take atorvastatin AKA Lipitor).

Awww, Rigel. Hang in there, man.

I'm an avid coffee drinker. I'm sure I'm addicted, but I also love the taste - in the morning, especially. I've had to go off it a couple of times, substituted non-caffeinated, nice tasting tea....just not the same. So I feel your pain!!

And, yeah.......just imagine how good that first cup is going to taste when your "de-tox" is over!!

I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this

When my DH was "cold-turkied" off coffee (he was in intensive care unit for heart problems), he was given morphine to help reduce (it didn't eliminate) the caffeine-withdrawal headache. And he was allowed decaf, because that has some bit of caffeine remaining in it. I'm not a coffee-drinker, but saw first hand how tough it is.
Sending you major prayers & vibes that you make a speedy recovery

Rigel,

I'm sorry to hear that you've been sick. They didn't say you couldn't have margarita's, right? That would be a fun way to start breakfast!
