I posted on another thread about Sasha's spay experience. No problems, done on Monday. On Tuesday she started with fevers, chills and higher than normal heart rate and respirations. Finally today after testing, steroid shots, etc. at my regular vet they sent me 1 1/2 hrs away to the specialist hospital.

I really liked the vet, she seem patient and interested. The first thing they were checking was the heart with an echocardiogram - all fine. She is still having high respirations and a little fever (off/on). The heart being OK is great news. Then they ran blood tests - CBC/FELV/Leuk - all OK, a few of them seemed high normal but nothing glaring.

Sasha is eating, drinking less than normal but took some chix broth tonight and milk last night. She just is breathing fast (not laboring or wheezing) and has the "chills" (hard to explain, never seen these in a cat before but just little shaking).

I'm back home now with some antibiotlc and pain meds. She doesn't seem to be in any pain from the spay, it looks good and she has been jumping etc. however vet said to give it to her just in case. She did say it might be neurological, or even FIP (scary). Just seems like we are all over the place.

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? Could the spay have caused any of this? I'll take any ideas I can follow up on right now (at least it will cost less than the 788.00 vet bill tonight
)

Thanks so much

Lauri (Sasha's Mommy)

Oh Lauri, how frustrating! The good news is that her heart's okay and her bloodwork isn't showing any glaring abnormalities.

She could've picked up an URI or illness at the vet's while she was boarded for her spay. The stress of the environment and the stress of the procedure can lend itself to any number of illnesses. It's really not all that uncommon. I had one of my girls come down with an URI 2 weeks after we'd gone to the vet every single time for a year!

I think I would get a copy of the medical bills and call around to another vet who would give you a consultation and second opinion. If possible, try an all cat vet if you have one in your area.

She could be having a weird reaction to the anesthetic. Try to find out exactly what anesthetics were used---all of them (usually at least 2 different kinds).

I am so sorry to hear Sasha had to visit a specialist
! I know this doesn't help you find an answer but she is in good hands, you are doing everything you can to find out what is wrong. It is hard to say what could possibly be the cause at this point. She has had all her vaccinations? You mentioned the specialist said her heart is healthy and her blood work came back clean. Is she using the litter box normally?
Once again I am so sorry........Sasha is in our prayers......

The stuff they used could have caused it.
I know Ketamine can cause it.
Thats why my cats are not allowed to have that.
I hope she feels better.

This is what I think, too. There is a recall on certain anesthesias made by certain companies. It's been kept under wraps and many vets don't even know about it. here is info on it.

http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-01-1...ing-recall-fda

On Sept. 4 at least two veterinary drugs made by Teva Animal Health Inc. a division of Israeli-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries were recalled by the FDA which shut the company down in July. But few veterinarians or pet owners were aware of the recall until the end of December.
The recalls involve two commonly used injectable veterinary drugs: butorphanol a fast-acting opioid used to control pain from surgical procedures in dogs and cats and the anesthetic agent ketamine.

How strange, it's well known over here that it's been recalled - and we don't even have that anaesthetic!

It is well known where I live that Ketamine been recalled.
I never knew about the Butorphanol though and that was just used on Wrinkles last week.
Ketamine is very unsafe for sphynx cats and I amde sure the vet knew.
It has killed so many sphynx and devons.
