Hello, I'm new.. and I really need some advice about my kitty. Her name is Millie and I got her six years ago from a friend of mine. she was born on a farm and I've pretty much owned her since birth. She was the runt of the litter and would've died if we wouldn't have taken her in due to the fact that she wasn't eating right. That was then. Now, she has always been a healthy little kitty, still small for her size, but lately, she's developed some sort of rash on her back just before where her tail starts.. i'm starting to get worried cause she's become crankier than she usually is, has been rolling around trying to scratch her back, and she's also been bitting at it. I gave her a bath once, cause it used to be at the back of her neck too. and usuing dawn dish soap, it cleared it away for a day and then it came back. this time she has small open sores on her back by her tail.. Could anyone help me out? is there anything I can do to make my kitty better? I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks

The first thing we're all going to think is fleas, and an allergy to their bites.

Do NOT use ANY over the counter flea products on a cat. Go to the vet and get the safe stuff. I use Revolution as it also protects against heartworms and ear mites.

Any change in behavior, potty habits, play habits, or eating habits means something's not right. Have you recently changed her food or started using a new or different cleaner or laundry detergent?

I'd take her to the vet and have a thorough check up done to rule out any internal issues.

Hm, I"m not really sure.. the only thing that might be different isthat i've been giving her more soft food that I usually do. and I also think my cat might be lactose intolerent. She can't have too much milk at once or she gets sick. and if we give her just enough milk at least once a week, to every few days, it keeps her from getting sick for any other reasons. Also, how much would it average out to be to bring a six year old cat in for shots. she's never had any before cause i've never had the extra money to take her in. Still don't, but I'm saving up so that I can.

shots pricing varies by area and often by vet... if you have a limited budget call the local humane society they often know where and who is do low cost shots...

here
vet a - rabies 20, 3 in1 16

vet b - rabies 16, 3 in 1 12, office call 20( does a through exam)

vet c- rabies 25 , 3 in 1 20 office call 25 ( not a big exam)

I'm pretty sure you cat is lactose intolerant (most adult cats are). A little milk now and again isn't dangerous, but if they have too much they may get an upset tummy.

And I also vote for seeing the vet.

If cost is a concern, speak with your vet's office about your money constraints before making an appointment. They may be able to work with you and set up a payment plan or use a care credit type program.

Good luck!!

Please find a way to take your kitty to the Vet. It sounds like she could have fleas and it must be simply awful for a cat to be so itchy from the fleas biting them. And yes, flea products you can buy in a store are not good and most are very toxic and have been known to kill cats (there are actual lawsuits against some of the companies that make them). Nothing you can buy, anywhere other than a Vet clinic, is safe or effective.

Your kitty is counting on you to take good, proper care of her.

Also, untreated fleas can lead to a cat developing tapeworm. This isn't something you want to just let go.

If you have other pets in your home, they could have fleas too and if you don't treat them all, you won't get rid of the problem.

Please find a way to get kitty to the Vet. And if she's never been tested for worms, that should also be done.

alrighty, well it's a little late to do anything tonight, aside from giving her the usual bath that seems to keep the sores at bay for a while. Tomorrow morning I will have my fiance drive me up to the vet and buy some flea products. Also i will talk to them about money issues to get her checked up for flea shots and tape worm shots and all the other millions of shots she's probly gonna need in the future. Thanks again everyone. Millie and I really appreciate the help ^_^!! also, Millie is my only animal, I would have more, but don't have the money lol. thanks again.
