Yesterday my MIL gave me a cryptic message that she had something pretty to show me at her house. "Is it kittens?," I immediately asked. "Well, they're not kittens, they're cats," she said.

I should probably explain that my SIL has been doing something very good. Her MIL's house seems to be a dumping ground for strays. So, even though SIL can't afford it, she has been taking the cats to have them spayed/neutered and trying to find homes for them. She is paying for the entire spay/neuter out of pocket whenever she can save up enough money, even though her DH lost his job and they are facing tough times right now. The HS has been giving her a senior citizen's discount (I think $35.00 per cat) since her MIL is on Medicare. There are probably close to 14 strays hanging out at her MIL's house.

Well, these two cats are stunning. They are only about 6 months old, so still more kitten than cat. There was a red tabby, which I promptly named Big Red and a torti that looked like the very tip of her tail had been dipped in orange paint. Her tail looks like a lit candle. I named her Flame, and was debating about the name Yellow Tail after the drink. Doesn't really matter, since I am at my limit with four cats and can't have either of these, as much as I'd like to.

They refused to come out of the cat carrier, though both allowed me to pet them. The torti was so loving that she rubbed her face all over my hands.

Here's where the bad part comes in. When I went home I purposely let Daisy, Speck and Marshmallow smell my hands, so that they'd know I'd been around other cats. Speck made a face, Marshmallow is so sweet he didn't care, but Daisy was beside herself. She kept sniffing my hands and my shoes. I bragged to her that I'd been unfaithful and that I'd do it again. "Momma has been running around on you." I have to admit, I sort of rubbed it in. Then, still happy about being off from work and meeting kittens, I danced and sang the '70s disco song Boogie Nights to her. I'm not sure, but I don't think she was impressed.

A few minutes later, as I was getting ready to take a bath, Daisy came in and chomped me on the bare leg.

The moral of the story is, if you do something bad, no matter how wonderful it makes you feel, you might not want to rub it in to others.

She got you, for sure! I often have occasion to 'fess up to my girls about having talked to another kitty or --
-- a dog. But while the inspection is going on I often comment, a tad acerbically, "yes, I was talking to..........., but I didn't bring him/her home, did I?"

Good on your SIL for looking after all those babies.

Thanks all! I'm really proud of my SIL for what she is doing. She has three cats and a dog - all of them in desperate need when she took them in, so she can't keep any of the cats either. (She had planned to keep the red tabby, but right before Christmas a solid black stray kitten came to her house, so now it isn't possible.)

As far as Daisy goes, the problem could have been my song choice rather than my teasing about cheating on her. That's what they emphasize on American Idol: song selection. Maybe I should have sang Boogie Fever instead of Boogie Nights.

that's a precious story.Whenever I am unfaithful to Bella I have to sneak into the apartment, take a bath and change clothes. If she smells another cat on me she starts this snorting thing that she does because she know that it upsets me. Oh, there is no peace in the house if I have gone astray

Aww, that's too cute! Kudos to your SIL for the good she's doing!

And now... You cheating scum!
You should be grateful a leg bite was all you got! I'd have slept with one eye open I think!

I went to the SPCA yesterday afternoon to drop off some cat and dog food and catnip toys I made, and to half-shop in the cat rooms... and Genever seemed pretty aloof all day/evening after I came back. I thought it was because BF got back from a business trip and she was mad at him for leaving, but maybe she was mad at me because I smelled like cats and I told her I was looking for a friend to bring home..

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Great story and well told!
And absolutely - kudos to your SIL for all she is doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... the only kitties we ever come into contact with that aren't ours are ferals or strays, so we can't let our kitties sniff, we have to wash up cuz we don't know what microbes we may be carrying. But when we fostered a lot, we told our gang to just suck it up - the little babies were homeless like they all were and they weren't staying permanently.

The only cats I smell like other than Maude, Attitude and Nuts are the ones outside, Mama, Biter, Half-tail, Runt, Goldie Jr and Grey kitty. I don't interact with Maude much, she prefers Paul and Attitude and Nuts can look outside and see the other cats, plus they are related to everyone outside except Grey kitty who just showed up one day and decided to stick around. They were outside with all but Grey kitty when they were little, obviously since they were born to Biter(or Goldie, Biter's sister, who just up and disappeared one day) and Mama is their grandma and Runt, Half-tail and Goldie Jr are their siblings. They all(including Attitude and Nuts, we are hoping Maude is still negative, but we have our doubts and we don't know if Grey kitty is or not) have feline leukemia so there isn't much they can transmit to each other since they were all raised together. So me smelling like them is no big deal, Maude, Attitude and Nuts are used to their smells, as long as they stay outside. None of them were thrilled when Mama came to stay when she was recovering from her prolapse before she decided she had had enough and let herself out when we opened thew door to take in groceries, we didn't care she had been with us for a week and she stuck around for awhile after going outside before heading off to where ever she goes to during the day.

Other than that I don't come into contact with other cats unless someone new shows up since people love to dump their cats here. Wonder if they would if they knew they were essentially signing their cat's death warrant due to leukemia. Since they are cruel enough to abandon them I guess they wouldn't care. They seem to dump them near here, guess they see that we have cats and assume we'll take care of theirs too. Too bad the only cat I have ever had them accept in the group, other than the tom when he showed up to 'service' one of the ladies before we got them spayed, is Grey kitty they run everyone else off. That is how our neighborhood tom(he doesn't live with us he lives elsewhere) got here, he just showed up one day about a year or so ago, same with Grey kitty a few months ago. I know Mama was dumped by someone, who knows how long ago, since she knows exactly what a litter box is and exactly how to use it.

I called SIL today but she was headed to work. I wanted to check the status of the new kitties and see if she's found homes for them yet. (There was a solid black one that she had taken to be vetted the same day as the others, but it had already gone home with its new owner before I went to see the kitties.) SIL is going to call me when she gets home...if she gets to come home tonight. (We are expecting weather and if her relief nurse doesn't show up, SIL is stuck!)

I believe the Humane Society has the kitties checked for feline leukemia and maybe gives a rabies shot along with the spay/neuter.

My MIL has agreed to keep Flame and Big Red until homes are found for them. MILs three cats aren't happy about the situation, but what can they do? The next time I see them, I will suggest they write their congressman.

Flame is going to a home as a companion to another torti. I wish so much she could be an inside cat; she is so sweet and loving. But the girl who is taking her loves animals and actually told Sil if she had a torti, she wanted her. The girl owns several acres of land, so Flame will have room to roam. Still wish she could be inside. But I keep reminding myself that Flame's circumstances are being improved, from stray to spayed, to a home where she's wanted and won't have to worry about going hungry. I am already attached to her, I grow attached very easily, and I will worry no matter who takes her. If only it could be me....

What about my poor injured leg?

You know, sometimes I think my problems with Daisy stem from the fact that we act too much alike (only I don't bite nearly as often).
