I haven't really read much about it, but I do wish they could have come up with a better name. iPad make me think of feminine hygiene products for some reason

Seriously though, apple does make good stuff so I am sure it will be a big hit.

That was the first thing I thought of, too.
That and an old TiraEcol comic making fun of the Mandrake to Mandriva name change (if you don't know what that is you won't get it).

Looks interesting, though it might be something you want to wait a bit instead of rushing out to get it (if you can even afford to). Often first gen out of anything has a lot of issues.

I'm more excited to just mess around with it in the Apple store or something... it's out of my price range. I need a small portable computer for school but I can buy a decent netbook for 300 and upgrade the ram for another 40 and have a good little computer that'll run Office for school work.

That's 150 less than what the iPad starts at, and that's an iPad with 16gb... that won't even hold my music... let alone my pictures.

I definitely need all my music on my school computer, as I'm a music-centric person

Cool? Yes. For me? No.

And for the record I've already seen a couple of references to the iPad and feminine hygiene on the internet.

Prettie big for my taste about and of course prettie expensive about...

furthermore, No Flash kills this thing. You can't surf the web today without Flash support. Everything depends on Flash. There are thousands of Flash apps out there, thousands of top rated web sites that depend on it.

I dont know what they were thinking.

^Maybe there are some minor issues with the lastest version of adobe flash player 10 for mac, too, and they just want to wait a little longer on that?
There are some minor bugs in the linux version, enough that some people say wait on installing it, but I went ahead and installed it with no problems so far.

I'm sure one could install it themselves anyways.

Apple hates Flash lol... they won't put it on any of their stuff. It's not because of a bug. They say it's because Flash consumes too much battery.

You can still download and install it yourself, though. Windows pcs don't come with everything installed, so it's not really any different.

Sure you can put it on a Mac... but you can't put in on an iPod touch or now an iPad... that was what I was referring to.

You can. You just have to know what you're doing and use a hack for it.

We're getting a little away from the original post that maybe Apple is waiting to add Flash support. They're not. The iPod touch has double the battery life that an iPad has and Apple still won't put it on for "battery reasons."

Apple putting it on is one thing, having to jailbreak a device and putting it on yourself is something completely different. Something that the vast majority of users wouldn't even be interested in.

I've had an iPod touch since they came out and had it jailbroken before the app store and then restored it to factory when the app store came out. Nowadays the majority of jailbroken iPods are only broken for piracy purposes. Last I knew Flash on a jailbroken touch was so buggy that it wasn't even worth it. A few months have passed since then though.

Just as a minor point, Flash won't run on any 64-bit app, including 64-bit IE.

I'm waiting for a really good reader, like the Kindle, but something that can download and read magazines, books, etc. I'm sure it's coming. I would be glad to continue paying for my magazine subscriptions, just to not have them stacked around the house, thrown out (wasteful!), or given away. I got the impression the iPad was going to have such capabilities.

I use my ipod touch for reading ebooks, most magazines and newspapers have an app where you can read the newest editions..although when I say most I mean the really major ones.
I really prefer that to the kindle, because it saves me so much space, who wants to carry around an ipod and something separate just for reading?

That's a good point, my boyfriend knows how to do it but he doesn't because of what you mentioned and also because something about how you can't install any software updates if you've hacked into it...
That's the same reason why he won't have his iphone unlocked, which I don't think is smart- who needs those updates anyway if you can use a better provider like verizon

ut0pia,

I use Verizon and agree it's the best provider however even if your boyfriend unlocked his iphone he couldn't use it with them. The reason for that is that at&t and verizon phones use different radios to connect to their networks. The radio in the iphone is incapable of connecting to verizon or sprint. However it could connect to t-mobile.

Fun geek fact of the day

I've never really used my ipod touch to read anything other than websites, it works well enough to read ebooks?

I just hate AT&T, they even block certain features of the iphone...I'd probably switch to any other provider LOL..
But yea you can read ebooks on the ipod touch, there are several apps one is called ereader, there is also a kindle app..
I also have a new york times app where I read news and stuff, it's free...
This stuff saves me so much space, rather than having a hard copy of what I'm reading I just carry my ipod, it's amazing..

I absolutely love my iPod touch! I bought a 16gb right after they came out and carried it forever and then I ran out of room so I upgraded to a 32gb a few months ago and gave my 16gb to my girlfriend.

The whole time I've owned one I suspect it's only been off of my person maybe half a dozen times. I used to have an ipod classic before touches came out and I never used it. I bought an ipod touch and instantly it never left my side

Same here, my classic ipod is still sitting around somewhere, I ended up getting like 4000 songs on it and never listened to any of them
..I use my ipod touch all the time, I use it to check my email, to get on TCS, and I don't carry a laptop to school anymore because we have free wifi on the entire campus so I can just use the ipod touch for everything..

I found that out when I got my new computer, which had Vista. It had both the 32-bit (for Flash) and the 64-bit apps.

But therein lies the reason why I consider most smart phones and products like the ipad to be useless. Does anyone honestly want to pay hundreds of dollars for a product that they're basically locked out of (as far as tweaking the OS, testing things/development)? Seems like a waste to pay for something that you don't truly own in that sense.
I'm more interested in what Nokia is doing with it's recent high end smart phone, N900. It has a full debian based distro on it that lets you add debian-arm repos and do pretty much whatever you want on it - including being able to run commands as root.

As for 64 bit flash, there is a beta for it. But as mentioned earlier, it has some bugs.
