What a fluke thing to happen

Two friends of my husband had been fishing. One always takes his little dog with him on the fishing trip. When they got back to the other mans dock, his big dog met them at the dock. He jumped this guy holding the little dog in his arm. He snatched him, shook him three times. The little dogs owner literally tackled this big shephard and managed to rescue his dog. The two men took the dog over to the emergency vet clinic since it was on the weekend. He was gashed open, three ribs broken, stomach injured. Estimate to try and fix him, between three and four thousand. The little pup was put to sleep. So far these two friends haven't talked. This is terrible.
The big dogs owner has offered to pay the vet bill. Let's all hope this is not the end of a good friendship.

That is soooo sad...in so many ways! Healing for both men.

I hope he accepts the offer of payment. It is only fair.

This is one reason I don't like big dogs.

OMG how awfull, the man obviously has no control over the big dog for it to have done so much damage.

OMGoodness...that poor little dog. I hope he does accept the offer of payment; it's fair.

Maybe the man will take his dog to obedience school now.

It's not a size issue. Little dogs can be very aggressive, too.

Problem here is what the problem always is. Someone not properly containing their dog with a leash.

I listened to a neighbor yell for her dog (a little westie) for close to half an hour last night. She just lets him out to run loose. They have a pen area behind the house and with their big house and fancy cars I assume they can afford a leash. When someone elses loose dog kills him or he gets ran over it's going to be completely her own fault.

I am concerned about it because the owner of the big dog has a grandbaby. If a dog would snatch a dog out of your arms, would it snatch a baby.
The little dog who died was Peanut. Maybe I should have posted this on the Rainbow Bridge Forum. Maye one of the mods will move it. My husband is their friend too and this man had brought his dog many times to our home to go on a fishing trip with my husband.

You never know. If you're truly concerned, carefully, discuss it with either him or some of his family (baby's parents). Just be careful because he'll likely be defense over his dog - which is normal.

How very sad for the man with the little doggie. He must remember that dogs are animals and as much as we call them family, they have animal instincts. You just never know what they will and can do. The larger dog should've been leashed, no question. I hope their friendship will continue once the shock is over for both of them.

This is one VERY BIG REASON I have cats. R.I.P., poor little Peanut!

Me too, Why would anyone want a dog, when they could have a cat.

This is soooo sad!!! It's a bit late to offer to pay the vet bill, when the only thing on it is the bill for putting the dog to sleep. He should have offered to pay it before the dog was put to sleep....

One...he should take the offer of the vet bill

Two...the big dog should be put down. I've heard that once a dog has attacked another dog and tasted blood, that it will continue to attack, no matter what.

It's not the big dog's fault. It's the big dog's owner's fault for not training the dog properly.

What a terrible thing to have happened. The guy must be devastated.

I know a lot of people like that. They don't bother to train their dogs, they'd rather stand at the door and scream at them instead. Drives me insane.

You are so right.....unfortunately, this will not be the last tragedy, and only Heaven knows how many other small animals, including cats, that the big dog has already killed. For the big dog to attack the little guy being held by a human signals a severe case of aggressiveness.
Condolences to all involved
