Stinky Kitty Breath

Thread Starter
I have a six month old kitten and we noticed about two months ago that his breath was very stinky. It smells lile the wet food we give them twice a week. Thet got fixed about three weeks and werent really eatting so we increased the amount of wet food but now its back to twice a week.
Ive heard from some people that its just because we are giving too much wet food, but i looked on the internet and they said it could be because of an internal problem... How can we tell the difference between something harmful or not harmful?

Also his mother who is about a year and a half now does not have stink breath.

He may have a dental problem. I suggest you bring him to the vet and have the vet check him over, especially his mouth, teeth and gums.

Canned food should not cause bad breath. I have two cats on all canned diet and they both have very sweet breath.

I agree with otto! I second the possible dental/oral problem. Neko eats canned food daily and no bad breath!

Okay, here are the most common causes of bad breath in young cats:

teething and/or other oral problems
coccidia and other intestinal parasites
digestive problems/IBD
feline leukemia

(Coccidia doesn't necessarily cause diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. A cat showing no obvious symptoms (other than bad breath for instance) can still be infected.)

If they were fixed, the vet must have done blood work and the results must have been all right because the vet went ahead with the procedure. So you could safely rule out kidney or liver disease. However, if the vet didn't do blood work (some don't), then you would have to start with that to make sure nothing gets overlooked. TashaaM, check with your vet about what was done and then go from there. Also, as a precaution. has this kitty been tested for FeLV/FIV? If not, you must do that, too, right away, to make sure he is negative. Also check for intestinal parasites. And, of course, have your vet look at his mouth.

For a simple digestive problem enzymes and probiotics may be very helpful.
