Ok.. so my two female pups (pug/rat terrior mix) that I rescued in May were barely 6 weeks old.. if that. They wouldnt take solid or canned food.. they wanted milk so I'm guessing they were still about 5 weeks. Anyways.. as they got bigger I inquired about getting them both spayed since mom let me keep them and they stayed in our yard and turned into wonderful pets. Well, at that point the vet said they were too young to be spayed. So I waited. I noticed some of their baby teeth were falling out and being replaced with permanent.. so I thought maybe that meant they were old enough so I called and he said no.. Ok.. so i waited.. I never noticed eithier of them go into a single heat cycle.. no change in behavior, no discharge, swelling....etc. So I became less worried and was planning on doing it last month. Well then ran into money problems.. being a college student and all.. parents really couldnt help me at that point eithier... so I was going to wait for our humane society to have another free or atleast cheap spay and neuter day. Well I've noticed lately that one of the pups (LuLu) teats were a little enlarged and her private area almost swollen looking. she never acted any different and the other pup (Tinkerbell) is fine. Lulu is a little bigger than Tinkerbell and is just overall more developed.. I was wondering if LuLu is pregnant. I know it's totally possible.. but I was researching and getting conflicting articles... and what about Tinkerbell? I mean they are never seperated.. I'm just confused.

Also was wondering if she is pregnant could she die giving birth since she is so small and young? All the male dogs around here are large.. Purynese, labs, border collie, those are the only ones that I have ever seen around the area. We have a male pitbull but he is neutered and he loves those pups to death.. It is soo cute. I will try to find a picture of him with them.. but untill then here is a picture of my girls!

It is veryvery dangerous for a dog to get pregnant on her first heat. Especially if she was bred by a larger male. I suggest talking to a vet, preferably one that is very experienced in dog reproduction (some aren't). A spay/abort may be best, unless you can easily afford an emergency c-section ($$$!). Dog breeding is complicated and Pugs, especially, tend to have birthing problems.

Even if she's not pregnant, the swelling may be a sign of something wrong. Or she may be going into heat now.....keep her (both really) away from boys just in case.

Dogs don't all go into heat at the same time, so even if one is pregnant this doesn't mean the other is, too.

Yeah I plan on talking to the vet tomorrow. I just need piece of mind for the night.. thank you so much for replying.. I really hope she is just in heat.. I actually bought them a kennel today like 2 hours ago because I'm not going to be home much and I want them put up during the night.. especially now. II'll update what I find out.

If anyone else has opinions please still tell me.. Thank You!

as far as I know....mind you I am NO expert....I think the soonest a female can/will go into heat is 6 months.Again, I AM NOT SURE!
I would second a Vet visit.
the swelling of the back side, is a VERY good indecation that she is going or in heat.

What age does your vet recommend spaying? 5-6 months is fairly standard---especially for smaller breeds, who go into heat at a younger age---and I don't know any vets who won't do a spay at that age (although some refuse neuters until a bit older). Odd. Hope you can get them into the low-cost spay program.

So they're about 9 months old now? If they haven't been in heat yet that would be unusual for their size. Very large breeds may not go into heat until 9-12 months but for smaller dogs 5-7 months is more likely.

They are around 8 months.. but I know.. thats why I'm really confused. But like I said when I did plan to take them in ( a month or two ago), it didnt happen because of money issues.. I mean it's my fault I'm not making excuses, but I am really worried about her. I feel like a bad pet mommy.. ( but I'm also not real impressed with our town vet eithier.. he almost killed Garfield (my kitty) when he was nuetered... long story... I just dont know. He doesn't have the "expert" vibe to me.. but I'll see what he says.

Yeah, if a vet can't do a cat neuter without complications, I'd have serious reservations about allowing him to do dog spays.

If they are in heat, be careful as to spay timing. A dog is extra bleed-y for about a month after being in heat, and it's safer to wait at least 2 months from when bleeding is observed. If she's not pregnant, of course.

If the females were never bred and you watched them outside and didn't see them with a male dog, they can't be pregnant.

It could be something else and you would be wise to get them to the vet and get them spayed asap.

I'm a little confused by your post. Are the dogs kept outside? If so there is a good chance she could be pregnant if she is outside unsupervised.
She could also be in heat or even be going through a false pregnancy.

My parent's beagle has never been spayed and has never been pregnant, however, her teats look like she is a nursing mother. She started developing this way when she was about a year old. I think it is moistly hormone related, as this has never happened with any spayed dogs I've been around. Cheyenne has been to the vet several times for vaccines, etc, but nothing is ever said about her appearance, so I am guessing that this is something the local vet must see a lot. Idk but I do hope you get your pups altered soon.

I would encourage your parents to get the Beagle spayed. Unspayed, she is at risk for getting early mammoray cancers or pyrometra.

Whatever did you find out? It sounds like she was coming into heat. I have a female shih tzu that hasn't been spayed, not because she is going to be bred, but because she is so small and has issues with anemia and her vet is worried about her undergoing the surgery. Any way, when she goes into heat her breasts swell and her vulva becomes very swollen and noticeable. When they come into heat it's about a three week process... a week coming in, a week in and a week coming out. I hope she is okay.

Yeah She's in heat. I have them in a large kennel now (when I'm not outside with them) and waiting for the humane society to send me the discount coupons I signed up for.. since I have two females. Thanks everyone for the help!
