Hey everyone!
I just have a quick question for those of you who supplement with salmon oil...how much do you give each cat, in terms of milligrams? I am considering starting my collie on salmon oil capsules because her coat is just not in as a good a condition as it should be, and she has a little arthritis inflamation in the winter....so, then I realized it wouldn't hurt to give the cats a little salmon oil as well, but I just don't know how much they need.

Also, would salmon oil have any positive effects on hairballs? I mean, it's supposed to reduce shedding, so theoretically, that would cut down on the hairballs, right? Maggie is still struggling with regurgitation at times, although feeding her pumpkin sometimes has helped a little. But if the salmon oil could help with this, that would be one more incentive for me to buy some and try it. I really need to get her to keep her food down and put on some weight...poor skinny kitty!

typical dose is 2.5- 5 mg ... ie 1/2 to one teaspoon

make sure the OIL is FRESH ... many sold are rancid at the time of sell... look for one with some sort of preservative ( e and c I like
)

How funny. I am planning to ask my vet about adding omega fish oils to Tolly's diet. His coat seems a little dry to me since switching him to the Innova (canned).

Tolly has liver damage though so I can't start anything without checking with his vet.

Is salmon oil the same thing as the omega fish oils?

is one more beneficial than the other? Any disadvantages to either over the other?

thanks

the OP makes a good point about if it will lessen hair balls. Tolly has a terrible time with them, getting worse as he gets older. I use a furminator on him daily, but still have to dose him with hair ball remedy every few days. I don't like putting the artificial stuff in laxatone in him that often so I change off with petromalt (mostly mineral oil) and cat lax. Cat lax is cod fish oil, and too high in vitamin A to be given more than every ten days or so.

His fur is like gossamer. He has a ton of it, no matter how much he sheds (it floats off of him as he walks, I tell him he's so hot hes giving off red sparks.. hehe)

I'd like in on this discussion b/c Ghost's coat is the only one of the boys that is not soft enough, IMO. and he sheds much, much more than the others. Even combing and brushing every day doesn't help.

Every animal has a different omega need ... this is 3, 6 and 9 plus 12 and 15( i think sorry sick and meds do not help memory;0 )..

I have one who does fine on a omega six of 2% another who needs 4.5% oh they are litter mates...

But I will cc you if Otto does not mind
