They fired him?

I know he was using the show to bash NBC pretty badly. A shame that he chose to handle things in such a childish manner! But I'm not surprised. I can't stand the guy and was really ticked when they gave Leno the heave ho in favour ot him!!! :blech:

Is Leno taking the show back? I hope so! The Tonight Show declined to badly under the reign of Conan!

As I understand it the show didn't decline with Conan, Jay's show declined so they gave him his position back and booted Conan to the curb.
It's too bad, I liked Conan, Jay is always so mean.

What actually happened.....(listen carefully, it's complicated, LOL!)

The 9 pm (10 eastern) Jay show wasn't working out, because people are accustomed to watching Law and Order at 9, not a daily talk show. So they decided to put Jay's show back at 10:35, but only for 30 minutes, then The Late Show/Conan could be on at 11:05. Obviously nobody was very happy with this....Jay with having only 30 min, and Conan because of the later time. So Conan refused. He said Jay could have The Late Show back and he'd go somewhere else (I always thought Conan would do better on a cable network). So NBC is giving him something like 45 millon as severance pay. Interesting all around.

For a while the info was changing hourly, but I think they have it all sorted out now. This is the most recent article I could find: http://www.nj.com/entertainment/tv/i...jay_nbc_a.html

The Tonight Show has been in decline since Carson. I haven't watched it since, cant stand Leno, can't stand Conan and the whole thing between the two of them was childish. The only talk show I watch once in a while is Jonathon Ross and you need BBC Canada for that one

I believe it was 4 or 5 years ago when it was decided Conan would take over the Tonight Show. Jay Leno was ready to retire then anyway, so he agreed to it. Fast forward a few years, and Jay Leno changes his mind, doesn't want to leave the Tonight Show after all, so he gets a Primetime show instead. All is well. But the ratings of the Jay Leno show tank, and the Tonight Show's ratings aren't all that hot either (though I can understand that; the humour and audience of Conan and Leno are vastly different and it would take some time to adjust and level out). The idea of moving Leno's show back was pitched, but it would push Conan to 12:05. There are a fair number of theories why Conan opted to leave the Tonight Show rather than have this happen, and the main one is that Conan believes this would mess with the legacy and integrity of the show. I'm also sure that after 17 years of following Leno, he didn't want to go back to being second-fiddle again (with the BIG show, the Tonight Show). He also didn't want to mess with the time-slots of the late night shows that follow the Tonight Show, so rather than have those particular hosts suffer, he left the show. That's class, he thinks of others and how they may suffer (think back to the writer's strike). Originally, I didn't see the problem, I thought Conan should take the 12:05 slot (it's only 30 minutes out of the way), but after reading the problems with it, I agree with Conan's decision. I'm not happy about it, but what can you do?

I'm ticked over this. I've been watching Conan for 8 years and I was tickled pink to hear he would be getting the Tonight Show (a dream he's had since he was a kid). Carson apparently had a zany humour as well, the same kind Conan has, and the Tonight Show was going back to that type of program. Add to the fact that the people that are fans of Conan are a younger demographic, and the "Tonight Show" we're used to is, as others have called it, "our parent's Tonight Show." Finally we could enjoy a Tonight Show that was OURS, that would tickle our own funny bones. Now we're back to bland, backstabbing Leno hosting it. I never watched the Tonight Show before Conan (purely because I just don't think he's funny; nothing against others who actually do like him), and now I'm back to not watching it again. Only difference is, where I tuned into the Late Night with Conan, that's not there anymore either, so I'm going to be EXTREMELY bored at night now.

I know the Fox network has a bad reputation, but they offered Conan a job 5 years ago and he turned them down because he was loyal to NBC. Now, I hope their offer still stands and he gets his own talk show again on another network, via the same route David Letterman took 17 years ago. I just hope it's a very accessible network (FOX, CBS, ABC) instead of Comedy Central or Adult Swim, which as a Canadian, I don't get (well, we have Comedy Network and I know Jon Stewart's show airs on that). At least he may have the option of moving back to NY, along with his staff (who moved with him from Late Night to the Tonight Show). Conan's too good a guy for this to have happened to him, and everything I'm reading is Leno is a sort of slimy fellow who only has the benefit of exposure and time giving him fame. Turns out not too many people actually like him.

Actually, he's handled things pretty quietly, with class. He's ALWAYS joked about NBC, for 15+ years. Heck, he even sang a number at the Emmys poking fun at NBCs expense. It's everyone else (Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel) who have lashed a whip at NBC over this decision. The occasional guest on Conan's show in the last week have made reference to the disgraceful decision of NBC, and Conan would try to tone it down (well, he jumped in when Robin Williams jumped into a song, lol). In the link posted in the first post, you'll hear him give thanks to NBC for giving him a chance for 17 years and putting him on the map (he was a comedy writer for The Simpsons and SNL when NBC gave him an interview for the slot of Late Night. He didn't have any camera experience AT ALL. A big leap of faith on NBC's part, and it worked out)

My favorite skit was from Late Night, when Conan took a camera and checked out a spot where people played old-time baseball (from 1864). It was hilarious, and it's one of the top all-time favorites of fans and Conan himself.

I used to watch Late Night With Conan a lot couple of years ago, but then I kinda stopped watching tv almost completely. I've never watched Tonight Show, I can't stand Leno. I hope Conan gets a good new show, he's great! And he looks like our president....

then I remembered the Finland President that he looks like and I had to check to see if you're from Finland. I remember when that whole thing aired, it was hilarious. Did you see the program when he went to Finland and filmed his experiences there? "Fagerstrom!" lol

I did see it, poor Fagerstrom.. "I know you're in there!!"
And that girl with bad hangover was just so funny, I bet she wasn't expecting a camera crew and Conan to appear behind her door..ever.

I had watched part of the show but fell asleep and didn't see his final words. Thanks for posting it. I feel bad for Conan but I am looking forward to seeing Leno back on The Tonight Show, he has always been my favorite.

Is he actually getting the tonight show back? I didn't read everything but last I understood he was going to have his own show or something and tonight show was a goner. I don't watch late night tv, it's not my thing. I feel worse for conan over what I read (not being there it's really hard to know what exactly happned.) I feel that Leno would have come out smelling a lot better if he had left as well. But... *shrugz* I hope everyone involved is better off in the end.

As for the bashing, I read that it was all about the ratings and fodder for jokes on the shows. From what I unserstood late light tv jokes are usually at other's expense anyway.

Be Safe.

Yes Leno will be back on The Tonight Show March 1st. He was #1 in his time slot going against Letterman and I guarantee he will be back to #1 again. I never used to watch late night TV either but I am retired now and stay up later

I don't live too far from the Old Bethpage Village Restoration where this video was shot. One of my favorites too! I have been there several times and seen the old time baseball games.

I wish they has just let Jay and Conan stay where they were. Moving them around was a big mistake!

I was very disappointed with the whole thing. I like Conan and I'm sad that he's off now. I sometimes watched some of Jay Leno's show(s) but I don't care for him much, although I do like him better than Letterman who I mostly find irritating.
