Sasha is staying overnight at the vet's again. He was doing so well. He was his normal self the last few days. His litterbox offerings could not have been better. This morning he had a crystal plug.

The vet said he has no infection or inflamation. His bladder has good tone (he was treated for a stretched out bladder two weeks ago). He just couldn't pass a crystal. The vet removed the crystal and cathetered him. He rinsed him out good. But Sasha has to stay the night with the catheter and a lamp shade around his neck. We discussed the diet and decided to give it more time. He said frustrated people might opt for a surgery (PU) that he has success with.

He congratulated me on my vigilance and says we can watch close and give the diet more time. He has been on a urinary health diet only three weeks. Oddly, when Sasha got a quickie urinalysis this past Saturday his ph level was reletively low; 6 compared to 6.7 when he got his first urinalysis back when his troubles began around Christmas.

In other news, when I took Sasha from under the bed to put him in the cat taxi, he howled, cried and clawed. Marlow, who was under the bed with him, yoweled and hissed at me for hurting Sasha. For a moment I thought he would attack me. As he was hissing he was coming toward me. I explained to Sasha after I got him into the taxi that he should ease up on Marlow. Marlow had his back. I swear they remind me of me and my brothers when we were kids.

Oh, so sorry Sasha had a relapse and is back at the vet...I hope you won't need to consider the surgery, although I've heard many have had great success with it. I hope the diet kicks in - sounds like you were trending in the right direction.

I love that Marlow was trying to protect Sasha - with my two, I usually only take on to the vet at a time...and if anything, they seem to enjoy being an only child for a while. I've got to say I've been lucky - hardly any hissing when I bring one home from the evil vet.

I went to the vet's and dropped off the t-shirt I had been wearing all day. The lab tech put it in with Sasha. I hope he gets some rest. If I had to bet, I'd bet he'll do well and come home with me tomorrow.

Ain't that the truth - and to think just a few weeks ago, you were worried about them getting along. I remember it sounding like my sons were killing one another - until we came in to separate them. Then it sounded like we were killing them both! Kids!

Hope Sasha is well soon and home sooner!

Oh sorry to hear about Sasha! It is a fear I have also that Beeba will start to plug again. I am paranoid!

Just asking, but what food was he on? Our vet says s/d for three months because it has the acidfier in it. Then c/d after 3 months. I believe it has low magnesium and is less likely to cause crystals.

You might want to ask about that.

Please keep us posted and I hope that he comes home with you today.

Keep the faith!

Sasha has been eating a mixture of his old dry recipe and the Wysong Uretic. I had been transitioning him to the wysong before I hooked up with his current vet. This vet said the Wysong was acceptable. When he came home after his hospitalization (1/4-1/7) I rapidly increased the % of the Wysong. Some meals were 100% Wysong Uretic. He was having some diarrhea so I would scale back a little. He has been eating at least 2/3 to 3/4 Uretic this past week.

His urinalysis this past saturday showed a lower ph. I thought his diet was working. It may be.

I was trying to get a prescription for Royal Canin and Hills c/d from the vet. I went in this past week and explained to the staff that I wanted to try ALL different prescription foods that would be acceptable to the doctor just so I could find something, hopefully canned, that he would eat. She made a hassle of it. She had the "why can't you just take what we sell here" attitude.

The vet is supposed to call me today after they close to come get Sasha if all is going well. I will have him all to myself when this happens. We will get to talk without the intermediary.

I sure hope Sasha starts feeling better soon! I just wanted to say, you don't have to have a prescription for Royal Canin or Hills. You can order them on-line, and PetSmart does carry them too. If you go to royalcanin.us, and go to "contact us", and email them requesting coupons, they will send them to you.
Also, I had a persian years ago with crystals, and Eukanuba worked really well, plus it is 100% guaranteed they will like it.
Many vibes for Sasha

Lots of for Sasha, and that you find a food he likes. It sounds as if the staff member just can't be bothered ordering anything. I've had to get a couple of different brands (including RC Urinary and Hills c/d) and give Jamie a variety in order to get him to eat the prescription foods. He's not at all fond of the canned/pouch ones, but has found some dry that he really likes.

Do stores sell non prescription grades of these foods?

Both petfooddirect.com and "The Pet Food Center", a local pet mega mart, require a prescription. I just called the local Petsmart and they will not dispense without a prescription either.

I'm almost sure I'll have all the paperwork they require when I leave the vet's office with Sasha. Hopefully today. The vet said he may call for me to come and get Sasha as late as 8PM tonight. Better late than even later.

You do need a prescription for the foods.
We had to get one with Coco.
Just ask the vet to fax it over to where ever you want to get the food from.
We did it with out any problems.

You do have to have a prescription for any of the prescription foods. I believe the Petsmarts that actually carry the food on site usually have a Banfield vet on the premises as well. I'm sure you can have a prescription from another vet, but you do need the prescription.

I honestly wouldn't trust any vendor who would sell without a prescription.

But again, here's hoping that your baby is feeling much better, and that you can find a diet that will work for him.

Sasha did not get to come home last night. I believe he is doing fine and the reason he did not come home is that the vet was at a social function til almost 10PM. He called me and said that Sasha was doing well. He will call me today when he goes to his office around noon. I can hardly wait to see Sasha.

You can order the foods on line but you need a prescription from your vet to purchase them.

diggerled: I am sorry to hear about Sascha. Your plan to try different foods will only make the problem worse.

Sacha needs to be on only ONE prescription food, and that one food only. These foods are designed to work best when they are the only food fed. Whether it is Hills prescription c/d multicare, (s/d at first, if needed) or Royal Canin S/O or the Wysong, you cannot switch around, it is counter productive.

I do hope Sacha's condition can be controlled with diet, but if not, Perineal Urethrostomy (PU surgery) may be the only answer for him.

I am thinking good thoughts for him, and please do keep us updated.

Started a new thread when I brought Sasha home today. Things here are not what I had hoped for.
