I had been suspicious of why the Chicken and Liver Patte and Salmon NB cat food not only smelled strange but my two cats would not eat it when it smelled off (both smelled like cheap canned dog food), so I got hold of NB's Animal Nutrition specialist Kristi Choy, B.S. and this is what she had to say.

First, keep track of the batch numbers and send us only "UnOpened" cans for us to test.

Sounds good but unfortunately my last 12 cans only seven were off (cats agreed and refused to eat) while five they ate and they did smell correct...unfortunately you can only tell a bad can after you open it.

So, I called her back and asked her if I could send an open sample quick frozen and sent overnight by Fed Ex so it will be frozen and intact so they can test the specific problem product rather than trial and error...she said no.

The bottom line problem is this is clearly not a batch to batch problem and the food is just too darned expensive to keep pitching as well as no longer really trusting what ingredients are actually in the product, now knowing that they do use imported ingredients and that the product is not made in their own plant but farmed out, I just don't trust them so it's back to home made where I know what and where the ingredients come from.

My two cats deserve the best and it's my responsibility as their caretaker to be sure that is what they get.

I only get the Venison & Green Pea and the Chicken & Green Pea in NB. They both have been fine with it - smells ok and the cats eat it and no one has gotten sick.

I also use only those two NB formulas. Milo and Mikey love them!

Both my cats are over 15 years old so I need to be careful to give them food with the least amount of filler, that is why I used only the NB Chicken and Salmon.

I don't feed NB. Riley had a serious unexplained illness last year, where he got sick, quit eating and had to be syringe-fed for a week to prevent HL. The ONLY thing that had changed was that he had just that week eaten 2 cans of NB for the first time. Not saying it caused it, but we (and the vet) could find no other explanation. So to be on the safe side, I just don't feed it.

Why not just send one of the cans to NB so they can test it? If there is a problem, then they can rectify it before more cats are affected. I've corresponded with Kristi a couple of times and she has been more than helpful. I can understand why she wouldn't want an opened sample - who's to say the sample wasn't contaminated during shipment? A while ago, Natura pet did some testing because someone accused them of putting acetaminophen in their dog food. the person sent the sample in a baggie instead of the original bag and the lab results came back negative with a note that the sample was returned in a baggie instead of the original bag. Meaning it could have been contaminated by the person accusing the company. I guess the person could still contaminate the food in the bag but if you've had 12 cans with the same issue, then that suggests something is off. If it was one or two cans, ok but 12 cans?
