Well my old vacuum died on me... what am I saying, it wasn't old, it was about 3 years old. It was a Dirt Devil, supposed to be a good vacuum, but never really worked as good as it should have for as much as I paid for it.

So it's time to get a new one, but I'm curious as to what other pet owners use and what I should spend my money on.

I'm really curious as to what you all think of the vacuums targeted to pet owners, like the Bissel Pet Hair Eraser or the Eureka Pet Pal? I've read tons and tons of reviews but I still can't help but feel that these are gimicky and that a cheaper model will do just as good. Would I just be paying for the word Pet on the canister?

My budget for this new vacuum is around $140, and yes, I know some of you love your Dysons... and I would love to get a Dyson but I also don't have the time or patience to sell a kidney to afford one right now

I just want to make sure I get the best value for my money, while still having great performance.

Thoughts, suggestions?

We have a Eureka The Boss Smart Vac 4870 that we've had for something like 6 years now. It's always in the top 10 of Consumer Reports ratings and labeled a Consumer Reports Best Buy. I didn't have much to spend on a new vacuum when I bought it either. It does use bags, but they are only $5 for a 3 pack.

Now they have a pet lover version. >>Link<<

I have a Dyson DC-17 Animal and it's amazing! My vote is for a Dyson...they're AMAZING!!! They're a little more pricy- but they are incredably well built and imo- worth every single pennt! Mine is by far the best vaccume I've ever used! If money is an issue, you can often find great deals on them if you check out www.amazon.com and other websites!

It's awesome if you have multiple animals or any kind of asthma/allergy issues!

I had a quick look on consumer reports, and the best rated vacuums for your price range were the "Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition Bagged U5491-900" and the "Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900", and both are supposed to be excellent for pet hair

Thanks for the replies so far

Both the Eureka and the Hoover caught my eye. Hoover mainly for the name since everyone I've ever known that has had one, loved it. That Eureka was also suggested by a girl I work with who sells vacuums at her part time job. My only gripe with that one is the bags, the less waste the better for me.

I do wish I could afford a Dyson because I would get the Animal model in a heartbeat, unfortunately its just way out of my budget right now.

Speaking of Hoovers... This one caught my eye, and it's under $100.
Hoover Upright Vacuum

Seems budget friendly and looks like a good vacuum. Only thing that makes me shy away is the lack of reviews both on the Sears site and Amazon. I really like reviews.
