Excuse the vent, I just really need to let it out......

I swear, this has been the most insane 3 weeks, EVER.

Things started to go down hill for me when my cat Teddy was quarantined for 14 days when he bit a vet tech. (That drama can be found here.)

On top of that whole fiasco, my father was laid off of his job of 22 years on January 4th. No severance, no warning, no nothing. There just isn't enough work. There also went my father's and my younger sister's health insurance. Unemployment is only giving him $255 a week.

I just graduated college this December. I had done my student teaching at a high school in my town. I was offered a position a permanent substitute for one of the teacher's I was with. Ironically, I started the day my father was laid off. It pays $90 an day, until I hit 30 working days, and then I would get a raise to $155 a day, retroactive. I thought things might be turning around for me since I would be bringing in a paycheck to my house.

Teddy came home the 10th, I was working full time, plus two part time jobs I've had since college. I really don't mind working 7 days a week if it meant that I could make ends meet. Things were looking like they were okay.

Well, I got some great news a few days ago! There is another girl who did student teaching at this high school. She has been working as a permanent sub for a teacher that has been out since the 3rd day of school. They went through 4 or 5 permanent subs before they hired her. Long story short- the teacher she is filling in for will be back on the 25th. As a thank you for sticking it out, they are giving her my job. Isn't that so nice of them?!

Yes, I'm more than upset by this. I was told when I first got the job that I would be observed and me being permanent would be based on how well I did. The funny thing is, I did well in my observations. The department head said he was very pleased and very impressed with me.... but, BUT he is also pleased with this other girl.... and he's decided to have her take over. Like as a thank you. I was also told this at lunch. I literally has one minute to pull myself together and go teach another class without thinking about how I was going to support my family.

Let me also note that I was left nothing by the regular teacher. I spent hours creating lessons because I had NOTHING to go off of. I didn't mind though, I like teaching. I needed the job. I wasn't going to complain. If I did something wrong, maybe I could better wrap my head around it... but I didn't. If she was a really GOOD teacher, I might be able to accept that as well. But she isn't. My sister has her. She doesn't teach them. She has them copy vocab from the book and use it as a "Study guide" on the test once every so often.

Today, I get a phone call from one of my part time jobs. One of my co-workers, who I have know since I was 15, has been given 48 hours to live. He has pneumonia which has become critical. He's on a respirator and things don't look good. He's only 28 years old. My grandmother is a mess since she works there too and is close to him. (My cousin owns a restaurant, it's a family business)

Ugh. I don't even have time to proof read this post since I have to go to work at another job!

I can't believe that they gave you a permanent position then just gave it to the other girl! That really sucks.

Is there a teacher's union in your area? If so, contact them. If not, talk to the administration in your district office.
