Fluids/CRF cat

When a cat is given fluids for its kidneys does it change the blood test readings on the creatine and bun values. Or is it just that is hydrates the cat and flushes out the kidneys. I am asking because my cat had fluids last Tues. when the vet did the first blood test and the bun and creatine were elevated. On Friday, the cat's bloodwork was about the same and the vet made the statement the fluids didn't help. Please answer

Subcutaneous (Sub q) fluids help keep the cat hydrated and keep the kidneys flushed out. It is not a cure for CRF, rather a maintenance program for cats who have kidney disease.

Sub q is not meant to bring the numbers down, though, if the cat was dehydrated with the first blood work, you may seem some reduction in the creatinine number after hydrating.

I took care of my Ootay (rb 5/09) with CRF for many years and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

There are meds that will help get the numbers down.
I will help you with anything you need to know.
I give fluids every other day to Coco.
Otto is right.
You also can not expect anything from doing the fluids one time.
Ask you vet about Azodyl.
It has helped my Coco and brought her numbers down.
Sorry about the pms they are full.
Do tou want my email addy?
You can write me there instead.

Mews, sure on the email addy. You can send it to me on a pm. I emptied my box this morning. I just got off the phone with the vet. He says it would help my cat to go ahead with some more fluids. I am not sure if I can learn how to do it. How do you keep from being bitten by the cat when you put in a needle.

Azodyl. Very, very important. Here is why:

My vet is all for using it.

One good, reputable place to buy it from:

I will send you a pm now.
Coco does not care when I put the needle in.
Have him show you how to do it the first time.
I can also send you ites that will show you.
It is easy once you are used to it.
Thriving Pets is where I get my stuff from.
