Warning.....this is gross.

Larry came out from the bathroom, after using his litterbox, and I could just tell from the way he was walking that all was "not right". He kept sitting down trying to lick his rear end, or the fur around it. I finally followed him and saw two big globs of poop hanging from his long fur on his rear end.

*sigh*

This has happened before, only not this much. He has really fluffy "britches", which I think are so cute. But the poop hanging on it sometimes is just gross.

I had to lure him with treats, and I had a container with warm water, and he just lays on his side and purrs while I try to wipe it off his butt fur. Normally, if it's just some streaks, washing it off will do the trick. But these were globs. Yuck.

I took a scissors and cut them off, practically gagging, then I kept rinsing it off with warm water. Now he's all clean, and happy, but I'm still grossed out.

I guess I should cut his fur back there, or have it shaved, but I really like his little fluffy white britches!

Ew.

Oh the joys of cat ownership!

But given the choice of cutting gross fur off or not owning a cat, I'd pick cutting gross fur off every time!

Aw, poor thing!

Does this happen every time Larry poops? I'm wondering if he's having trouble with constipation, and that's why it gets stuck to his fur sometimes.

What do you feed him?

I know what you mean about not wanting to trim down his bloomers. Their own special fur features are so...special.

Yeah. Me too. It's not his fault he's got long beautiful britches!

No, not every time. And he's really regular. I could set a clock.

Every once in awhile his poop is soft, though, and that's when some of it sticks to his britches. Never in clumps, though. I think this was an oddity. Never happened before.

I recommend you keep a close eye on his pooping habits and see if there is any straining, a lot of changing position in the box while squatting, and so on, when he poops.

If he's developing a constipation problem, you'll want to get a handle on it right away. Chronic constipation left untreated leads to megacolon.

Do you groom him every day?

No, as I said, he's very regular. And he poops alot....no constipation problem at all. It just got stuck. And I comb him and brush him every day. It comes with having a long haired cat.

Yes, I agree, grooming the cat is part of having a cat, long or short hair, but not everyone realizes, is why I mentioned it.

It may be, the times the poop gets stuck to his fur is times when there is a lot of fur in the poop.

Just for general information, constipation does not necessarily mean the cat doesn't poop at all. It can mean having trouble passing the stool, the cat is pooping, but having a lot of trouble passing it. I am not saying this is the case with Larry. Just mentioning.

I have a fluffy britches kitty too. When he had runny poo or it was sticking to his back end I started trimming it. Not to the point where it was shaved but enough that it was all one length and wasnt a horrible issue with his poop. That might be something to try especially if you dont want to shave his back end.

Yeah, I think I'll start cutting his fluffy butt down.

There are two major reasons why I don't own (and never will) a long haired cat.

1. Too much grooming each day (combing); and
2. Having to deal with poopy behinds!

This is the first time I've had a fluffy-butt kitty. The grooming I sort of like, and so does he, and he gets his Petromalt. And I really get a kick out of seeing his rear end walking away.

But.....it's time to cut some of it down. Maybe I'll have to start calling him Larry Used-To-Be-Fluffybutt.
