I finally got around to reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett and couldn't put it down. Fiction isn't usually that appealing to me, but I loved the characters and wry humor. Now I want to see the movie.

Just finished Explosive Eighteen, the new Stephanie Plum novel by Janet Evanovich.

I'm now reading Clive Cussler's Devils Gate on my Nook and am also reading the new Stephen King book 11/22/63 in hardcover.

The last book I finished was The Girl Who Played With Fire and I started to read Smilla's Sense of Snow, but I'm confused as all heck and I don't think I'm going to keep reading it. Next up is World War Z biggrin.gif

I've just finished two non-fiction books, Royal Blood - King Richard III and the Mystery of the Princes by Bertram Fields and Die grausamsten Serienmörder in Deutschland (Germany's cruelest serial killers) by Norman Hall. The latter was a disappointment because it didn't get into any depth, but the former was really interesting because it was a lawyer's, rather than a historian's, interpretation of the available evidence.

I asked for "Game of Thrones" for Christmas and got it! So I've started that, and I'm already hooked on the characters, the atmosphere. I can see I'll have to read all of the others after this. I love cracking open a new book!

OMG I just finished the girl who played with fire and I am sooo happy I picked this up!! I thought The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was overall slow and not all that exciting, but the second book in the series is so much better, IMO!! I immediately started The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's nest and I am already 100 pages into it agree.gif I am just loving this trilogy!!

To my SS elf! I'm reading the books you sent me - Feist's Magician. I love them!

Currently reading The Tattooed Girl by Joyce Carol Oates and am enjoying it so far! It's a little hard to read in parts (touchy subject matter) but it is worth it.

after World War Z decided I needed some "fluff" so I'm reading a Sandra Brown novel, "Where's There's Smoke". I've always like Sandra Brown, but boy can you tell the difference in writing skill between her and say, Steig Larssen laughing02.gif but I still like it!

I've just finished The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell (the first of his Warlord Chronicles trilogy/Arthur books). It's quite different from the Mary Stewart Arthur books, but a good read.

I've always liked the Mary Stewart Arthur books, so I'll have to check this out....even though it's different, it still sounds good.

One of my GFs gave me her entire House of Night series to read when I was in CT back in October. I've finally started to read the books and have just started book 5 -- Hunted. I guess it's more for older teenagers, but I'm enjoying the series.

I've finished the second of Bernard Cornwell's Arthur trilogy: Enemy of God. It was good, and I'm looking forward to reading the third. Anybody who likes the Guinevere/Lancelot romance stuff probably won't like these books, because they're both portrayed rather negatively. Merlin and Nimue are minor characters.

I'm currently re-reading a series of books that I consider to be my guilty pleasure, lol not because they're dirty books or anything but jut because they're written for younger readers. Of course my love of cats have nothing to do with me liking them 1bluewinky.gif   Anyways the series is the "Warriors" by Erin Hunters.    If any of you haven't heard of the books, they're about feral cats living in a forest. There's 4 clans that struggle against each other for dominance over the forest and over food guided by their strict code and guided by Starclan (past warriors who have died guiding them with omens and prophecies from the heavens.)     I think my favorite thing about these books are just how much work the author put into them. The intrique clan structures and the mythology that she came up with for these books.  My favorite is the original arc. The first installments of books is called "Warriors: Into the Wild" There's 6 books in which the main character, an housecat first named Rusty, beckoned into the forest in his dreams, give up his life as a "soft kittypet" to join Thunderclan, a noble clan of the forest lead by a wise she-cat name Bluestar. There's battles, greed, treachery, murder, food shortages, killer dogs and the constant rivalry between clans as Rusty journeys to find himself and to fulfill a prophecy to save his new forest home and clan he loves.

The second arc is called "Warriors: The New Prophecy" which takes place several "moons" or months after the first arc where a new generation of warriors must journey far from their forest home to save all of the clans from sure destruction.

I've only read the first two series. There's also "Warriors: Power of Three" and "Warriors: Omen of the Stars."    Its been confirmed that there's going to be a fifth set of Warriors books that's like a prequel to everything and its going to take place during the dawn of the forest Clans.

There's also several side books that dive deeper into the lives and thoughts of the major characters such as Bluestar, Firestar(intially named Rusty), Starclan, Crookedstar, and Yellowfang.

My girls used to love that series.

HollyHeart's name came from this series.

I guess there's one in one of the books somewhere.

Either that or it was just Holly, and they put the Heart on the end of it b/c she's a warrior now. laughing02.gif

I read a little of it.  I like the beginning of the story when they're making fun of "kittypets" laughing02.gif  All 3 of my cats can be classified as a "kittypet"

Was 18 any good?  I wasn't really happy with 17.

I have it on hold at the library, I think I'm number 50 or something in the hold queue

I liked that book.  Liked it better than the movie.  The movie followed the book pretty well- though I was happier with the book's ending than the movie's ending.

I enjoyed the Help. The book better than the movie for sure.

Right now I am reading Dewey's Nine Lives. I love stories like these!

Hey you have the same name as me!   Except mine's spelt with an "S" haha

Anyways, yeah in the New Prophecy books, she's called Hollykit since she's a kitten but I beleive in the next group of books so goes through 2 more namechanges, ending in Hollyheart as her warrior name

So that's where the kids got it from!  I didn't think either of them had read the New Prophecy books- I thought they'd just read the older stuff.

That's where I found out what a "kittypet" is.

The Hollyheart I own  is NOT a warrior in any way, shape or form

If you want to compare her to something- compare her to "mayhem" in the Allstate commercials.

I've finished "Excalibur", the third in Cornwall's Arthur trilogy. All three books were quite good, though I could have done with shorter descriptions of the battles. I've also just finished "Richard III and the Murder in the Tower" (non-fiction) by Peter A. Hancock, which was a bit tedious, although it wasn't very long. It was primarily about Lord Hasting's beheading, for those familiar with the period in question.

I've got about three more chapters of "Finding Amy" (true crime) by Joseph K. Loughlin and Kate Clark Flora, about a 2001 murder in Maine.

I'm sure you know that he hasn't finished that series.  If it takes him as long to write the next book in the series, I would suggest you read the current books v e r y  s l o w l y.

Right now I'm re-reading Mordant's Need by Stephen R. Donaldson.  I finished part 1 (the Mirror of Her Dreams) and I'm halfway through with part 2 (A Man Rides Through).

Lately, I've been finding books on my bookshelf to re-read because (1) I can't afford to spend money on extra stuff and (2) I've been having a hard time finding something I really want to read.  I usually go to the used book stores or sales online.  I'm mostly reading fantasy books these days, and I like the epic ones like George R R Martin's series.   But I really prefer to start them after the author has finished all the parts laughing02.gif

Yeah. I did know that. And I was also told that the books keep getting bigger and bigger. One friend I talked to said he got the latest one, which is still in hardcover, and he can't even hold it up while he's reading in bed at night! laughing02.gif

I've never read a fantasy series, so this is a first for me.

Bigger and more than there were supposed to be originally.  Yes, the hard cover is huge..which is why I bought the Nook version.  I'm having that trouble with A Man Rides Through, it's hard to hold it up while reading in bed (which is pretty much the only tmie I have to read these days).

Also, GRRM's books aren't typical fantasy, which is what is so good about them.  I like fantasy, some of it, but it can get pretty formulaic (is that a word?).  Not unlike other genres, I guess.

Tricia (and others!), if you like nonfiction, try David Kennedy'sThe American People in the Great Depression.

It's assigned reading for my American Presidency class, but it's absolutely fascinating. Not "school-ish" in the least. I'm a history major, so my opinion is likely biased, but it makes reading straight history truly enjoyable.

No, it wasn't. Just more of the same old stuff. No real plot. I'm getting very disappointed in the whole Stephanie-Ranger-Joe thing.

Just finished re-reading Arctic Drift and Skeleton Coast, both by Clive Cussler. And started Double Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. This is the book series that Dexter is from on Showtime.
