Need ideas… how to make a food bowl unmovable.

In my house we have two “cat only†sections that are sectioned off by child gates. One of them is our spare bedroom and this is where we keep their food. To start to explain Bonnie and Bruno have a very special bond, they are tied at the hip and hang out and cuddle all the time. Our baby gate has a small hole cut out for the cats to go through.

What I think is happening (and you may think I’m crazy but I have somewhat witnessed this with the two) is Bonnie is moving the food bowl to the hole so Bruno can eat out of it. This has gone on a hand full of times and it makes Bruno very sick to the point where he will vomit up rust colored liquid, diarrhea for days, etc. This morning he ate 2 cups of cat food and I’m worried he will get sick.

So my question… without spending too much money how do you make a food bowl unpushable? Bruno’s food bowl has a rubber bottom, but those dishes are like 15$... for three bowls that’s too much I can’t spend. Any special mats you guys have used that actually work? Or make shift solutions?

Thanks guys, I appreciate your input.

Well a couple of things come to mind. Find a heavier bowl and and use it, or place the food bowl IN a heavier bowl.

Make a frame of 2x4s and place around the bowl so the bowl sits down in them. Put a bottom of plywood on and its heavier yet. Unless your kitty is a lion, she should not be able to move that type of thing. Put the unit on gripper or carpet tape. Or a piece of rubber.

Put something heavy in the bowl. Fill up a plastic container that has a top with something heavy like gravel or sand. Place it in the bowl, You may need to get a bigger bowl to accomodate this.

Get a chain........

Hope this helped.

I use a non-skid drawer liner under my cats plates to keep them from sliding around when they eat. It's really inexpensive for a whole roll of it. It comes in various colors and you just cut it into the size you want.

Here's an example: http://www.amazon.com/Grip-Shelf-Dra.../dp/B000KFSOFI

I get mine at Target, but I've seen it at Home Depot, Lowes and many other places too.

I use an elevated feeder for my cats dry food. It has little nonskid rubber feet so it is very hard to move. And it uses heavy pet bowls.

This stuff is great. It is very "sticky", not tacky glue sticky, just keeps things really put where you put them. It's kind of a mesh rubber thing that looks like it would do nothing, but it works!
(for any Food Network fans, Alton Brown uses it under mixing bowls to keep them from sliding all over, it's a multi tasker!)

Any old fat phone yellow pages lying around? Carve out a hole in the center of the the book big enough for the bowl to fit in and settle it down. Takes a bit of manual labor but a good way to keep a bowl stationary.

I got a box from Costco- the ones that the merchandise sits in on the shelves and then they put in the bins so you can use them when you check-out- it has 3 high sides and the front side is shorter- maybe 3" tall. The dishes fit right inside and they can't move them and food can't splatter or anything.

You could put the bowl inside a cardboard box that the cats can jump into but won't be able to get the bowl out (that I would like to see!) or cut a hole in the side for them to get in. Just renew the box when it gets wet or dirty, or put a rubber mat inside to wipe clean.

Maybe put velcro on the bottom?

That's what I did with the Petco plastic water fountain. One of my girls loves to push anything with water in it. And I got sick of mopping up the kitchen. I used industrial strength velcro and this makes it even hard for me to lift up (without spilling)! So maybe just a bit of regular velcro will do. Prior to the fountain, I used a heavy duty dog bowl for water and that worked too.
