Should xrays be done?

Long story short - I had to take Mouth to the vet yesterday because he was acting odd. I left him there overnight so they could get a urine sample and so they can examine him in the morning since my car is broke and I didn't want to take any chances in delaying necessary care. We had to see Dr. MM since Dr. MW had the day off.

I'm sitting here wondering whether the vet made the right choices yesterday. I'd like opinions because I'm not sure if this doctor is any good.

My cat has a history of calcium oxalate bladder stones. He currently has a stone stuck in his right ureter (the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder) and I'm told it cannot be removed. His right kidney is enlarged and the left kidney is smaller than normal. There are no other known health problems with the exception of a heart murmur. All blood work in the past has been normal, we're still waiting for results from the recent blood work.

He is currently on a very low dosage of Prednisolone - he's currently getting 2.5 mg every other day for itching and has about four to six more doses left. He's been on it for about two weeks.

On Monday morning he vomited and had not eaten for 10 hrs before that. He did not eat after this (a total of more than 14 hours). He was sleeping and looked odd. When he went to stand up, his rear legs were wobbly. I took his heart rate at home and it was 96, respiratory rate was normal but I can't remember what it was.

Dr. MW was contacted and wanted Dr. MM to check for an urinary obstruction. He also wanted blood work and a urinalysis done. He thought that if Mouth wasn't blocked then he could possibly have pancreatitis, diabetes, or other.

During the exam, Dr. MM said the bladder was empty which meant he wasn't blocked but noted that there was feces in the colon. He noted that the abdomen wasn't painful but I said I thought Mouth had been limping up the stairs recently and that I thought something might be wrong with his hip. I also said that I thought he had suddenly put on a bit of weight. I asked about doing xrays and was told they weren't necessary. Dr. MM said he wanted to wait until Mouth had a bowel movement before doing xrays.

Dr. MM noted that there was a possible diagnosis of diabetes, hepatopathy, nephropathy, pancreatitis, other.

I'm thinking that an xray should have been done. I don't think Dr. MW will be in today so I'm not sure what to do. Do you all think an xray should have been done? I won't know anything further until late this morning.

If Mouth had a substantial amount of stool in his colon, it may make sense to wait to do the x-ray as long as he's stable. The stool can block the ability to see the organs, so rather than take an x-ray that doesn't show the full picture, it sounds like the doctor preferred to wait till a better view of all the organs could be seen.

As of Wednesday, Mouth had not had anything to eat or drink in over 30 hrs. He hadn't used the litterbox in over 18(?) hrs. This is very unusual for Mouth considering he normally eats every couple of hours or sometimes several times in one hour. He also usually urinates three times a day. Dr. MM still did not want to do xrays. Does that sound right?

It's been a stressful couple of days. I'll try to post back later with more information.

Is Mouth still at the vet? If not, get him there fast. No urination in 18 hours is a very serious thing. Has he even had a bowel movement yet? Do you trust these vets?

I agree with Otto. Take your cat to be seen by a good vet.

This is just a quick post because I don't have time to write more.

Near the beginning of those 18 hrs Mouth was given 100-150 ml of fluids. He did not urinate, but a small sample of urine was taken via cystocentesis (there was only a small amount of urine in the bladder).

I don't trust Dr. MM, but none of the other doctors are at the clinic, yet. I'm having trouble finding somewhere else to go. I live in a very rural area and my choices are limited. Right now my car is broken and that limits my choices even more.

I just asked one of the assistants if they would call Dr. MW for me to do a consult over the phone. I'm waiting to hear back.
