I just got a sample of cat grass seeds I'd ordered today.

I used a 4 inch clay pot, and potting soil, so in a few days I'll have something else for the cats to tip over and make a mess out of.

Where do you suggest I get more seeds? it kills me to see $1.50 for the seeds, and $5.00 shipping. that's just dumb. just be honest and charge 4 bucks for them and ship at a fair price.

Anyway, the ones I got are oat. There's a website you can send a SASE to get a free sample.

if the cats like it I'm going to cycle them, keep one by their dish, and another growing in the kitchen so i'll always have some.

where do you get them from?

FYI if you want to try these free too just to get an idea, here are the details of the sample.
To receive your FREE Sample Packet of Natural Oat Cat Grass seeds, just MAIL us a #10 SELF-ADDRESSED return envelope, (size 4 inch x 9 1/2-inch) with Three FIRST CLASS U.S. Postage Stamps attached to the return envelope.
Do not use a postage meter label on your return envelope. A dated postage label can not be sent back to you.

Because of the weight of the seeds we're sending you, your self-addressed return envelope must have (3) .42 cent stamps attached. Mail us your self-addressed return envelope inside of another envelope that's addressed to:

POOPSIE CAT PRODUCTS/ FREE SEED SAMPLE
3435 CHANNEL WAY
SAN DIEGO, CA 92110
They shipped it right away.

here's the page:

Most of pet stores usually sell packages of seeds. That would probably be a lot cheaper.

FWIW, I tried the cat grass a few times and finally gave up. The first time, I bought a small plastic packet with the soil and seeds already in it. I just added water and put it in the sun for a few days. That one was too light and when the cats would tug on the grass, they would knock the entire thing over. The next time, I planted the seeds in a big heavy clay pot using my own soil. The cats didn't tip that one over, but since it was large enough, they took turns taking naps in it. That killed the grass in less than a week and I gave up.

I sell an ounce of seeds (that's 500+ seeds) for $2.50 and shipping and handling is $2.55 (that includes my packaging costs.) I send one free bag for every 4 ordered, total shipping for 5 bags is $4.95, plus I throw in a bonus bag of catnip.

If you are interested, send me a PM and I'll give you my info.

I got cat grass for Christmas. It grew fast! Gigi did not find it on her own; I had to show it to her and encourage her to check it out. She really wasn't interested. HOWEVER. What I've been doing is clip tops off with kitchen shears and snip it right into her canned food (well "chopped") and mix it in and she eats it all! So she does get her greens that way.

Our local pet store sells it already grown in cardboard pots for less than 400yen, so I gave up on growing it. If it isn't well-sprouted Aya has the tendency to uproot it in her enthusiasm and make a total mess. The pot lasts about 2 weeks then dies and I replace it.

Yeah I saw it at the pet store, I kind of wanted to do it just for kicks. It's not really a money reason. I think it'd be fun to do. but i might get bored with it quickly. I got a clay pot and catch plate at walmart for 6 bucks so it's not a big deal, plus a huge bag of potting soil for 4 dollars. I just need to get another pot and plate so i can rotate them.

Anyway, I appreciate the suggestion, and very well may end up there if I get frustrated or bored.

For some unknown reason i hate going to the pet store here. We only have one. Pet Smart. Or is it petCo? Either way, it's across town and I'm lazy :p

But yes I can certainly see my brats dumping it out.

that sounds pretty good. Helping support a forum member makes it seem a lot smarter too.

I'll PM you.

Fastnoc, go down to your local Home Depot or whatever and get a bag of rye grass seeds. They're commonly used to keep a lawn green through the winter. I'd bet you can get a bunch of them (many pounds!) for not much money. I just checked online, and you can get 25 lbs for $50. Keep five pounds (which will last you until your cats die of old age) and sell the rest online for $1 for 4 ounces.

Don't say I didn't give you good business advice!

I buy my cat grass seeds at Petsmart usually. The cats really like the Cosmic Catnip "Kitty Herbs" mix.

For a container I have 2 rectangular containers I got in the Target $1 section several years ago now. They are very similar to this. They are the only containers I've found that the cats don't tip over. We've tried the clay pots and nice ceramic pots, but the rectangles seem more stable.

wow i didn't know that's what it was lol. seriously?

Well i've done it. I grew some cat grass. absolutely amazed at how fast it grows.

I put it here, by the food dishes. My cats approached it, stuck their faces in it, Tinker put her paw in it then licked her paw like she always does, and they both walked away

Here's how it sits and has been here since yesterday

It can also be barley, where I live that's the only kind they sell for cats. You can buy a large bag of barley for almost nothing at places that sell chicken feed, I got a ten pound bag for three euro a couple of years ago. When I go to meetings from local cat forums I always bring bags of barley for everyone and I still haven't managed to empty the bag.

oat grass seeds are available 50lbs for about $11 at your local livestock feed store. They are called Whole Oats Go and ask if they have any busted bags, they'll probably give you a handful for free

yeah actually i went to a farm store about a half mile from me, and got a bag of oat seeds. i think it's 5 pounds. paid 1.75.

But i don't know waht it was i got from that place. man.. they said put 2 tablespoons in a clay pot (as pictured) so i did. they grew about 12 inches high, in about 8 days they started drooping, and the tips got yellow. so i got the 8 billion seeds from the farm store, and went to dump out the ones I grew. (FYI wilbur started eating it.). I just grabbed the grass and pulled it out. it was so overcrowded, the soil, roots and everything came out in one clump. the roots were growing out the bottom of the pot about 2 inches in a tight lump. The rest of it got so crowded, the roots had grown to the bottom, then back up to the top, and down to the bottom again. lol

so i cut the seed count in half and started again
my newbie seeds haven't sprouted yet, but we'll see what happens. i paid 4 dollars for a 10 pound bag of potting soil at wally world. so i've got enough for awhile.

I was going to recommend a feed store or even an organic nursery. It's ridiculous what it costs to buy a small bag of seed for against buying it by the 1/2 lb at a feed store.
