My long-haired neutered-male cat must not have very good cleaning habits. He reeked of urine on his bottom. I decided to give him a bath and found that he also had a big clump of liter/poop stuck back there. I figured that must have been what the problem was. He is so furry, that I had not realized was so dirty back there. After giving him a bath, he smelled so nice and clean, but two days later, he again reeked of urine back there. So I gave the back half of him a bath this morning again. I can hardly believe that he smells so foul in two days time. Does anybody know if this is because he maybe doesn't wash himself back there after using the liter box or is he for some reason peeing all over himself when he pees? He was a stray and has always had a different smell (not bad) to him, but this is a recent problem and wonder if anybody has any suggestions. He was recently neutered and so is still kind of shaved in the back. His fur is going to continue to grow back and I fear this problem will get worse. Should I try to keep him shaved back there? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

Since it sounds like he doesn't have good grooming habits himself, it might be a lot easier to trim or keep the fur short around the tail/back legs area. He certainly won't want to be washed every other day!
Longhairs can have this problem a lot in messing up the fur when they pee or poop.

Talk to a groomer. Ask if they do a lot of cats and if they're do a sanitary shave (goes by different names). It's just clipping the fur down back there - it'll last for a few weeks.
Other things that could be contributing - is his litter box large enough? Sometimes when they're not a cat can't get their tail out of the way well enough or will even step in their own feces/pee on their feet.
