need HELP getting an antibotic to cat....

One of the ferals has 2 very nasty "bites" on his tail. I did all i could to trap him this week to get him to the clinic - and failed.

I got the clairmox (?) antibiotic. However the bugger isnt interested. (when i gave this to another cat - THIS cat was always there to get the food and NOW he could care less.

Im giving the meds in a dish (same i used before so he would be used to it) with canned food.

Of course I have to push away the other cats.

Is there any other ideas on how to get this med to him??? I only have so many days before it expires (i think)

THANKS

Clavamox is only good for x number of days after it is mixed, I too cannot remember how long now (14 days or 7 maybe?).

IMO, the problem with it is the smell. What kind of canned food are you putting it in? It would have to be something very stinky (maybe Meow Mix cups?) to cover the smell of the Clavamox.

I mix 9 lives real beef - they all LOVE it - and like I said he was into it the time I had to give another cat the clavamox. That may have been chicken though - would that make a difference in covering hte smell? although 2 other cats are trying to get to it...

I think i freak him out cause i try to put the dish in his face (the other cat ate that way). but if i place the dish on the ground - chasing hte others away will only scare him away too.

he DID get a tiny bit last nite - and i thought "no problem" as he took 2 bites and then walked away

ill try the chicken and if that doesnt work - what if i double the dose in a bigger dish and let the 3 that eat close to me at it... the meds wont really hurt hte other 2 right? i know he wont get the full amount - but its something...

When I have to give an antibiotic to one of my ferals I put it in their food. I always mix wet and dry food together and put the antibiotic in the food also. Mine all get their own dish, however they like to make the rounds to all of the dishes. In order to treat one of my cats, I have to treat all of them.

If the tail begins to look worse - maybe you should try other things to be successful at trapping him.

I'm really sorry for you - this is tough!

I tried trapping him and another cat a few months ago - i tried every week for almost 2 months (a trap and 3 different size carriers). I had to give up. So now when these guys have medical issues - its really hard. Luckily I can get hte antibiotics and for cheap - but they also need their shots...

His tail looks the same and hes still doing fine.

I did try the chicken which seems to work better - he got ALL the meds last night and a little today before another cat scared him off - but he is getting it so I feel better now

You will have to trap and isolate him in a holding cage--I use a large dog crate for that--because you will need to feed and medicate him in isolation. Liquid Clavamox is a suspension that is good only for ten days after being mixed and must be refrigerated; it does you no good to go that route unless you can handle the cat and give it oral medication. Clavamox also comes in pills--two per day for an adult cat for two weeks.

The pills are relatively odorless, but who knows what a cat can smell? I grind them and a lysine tablet (doesn't hurt) and mix it in with canned cat food--sometimes I'll add tuna oil or anchovies for odor, and the cats seem to like it. In isolation the cat will eat the food and get its meds, which is what you want....
