I have a 3 yr old indoor cat that we feed with Pro Plan Light (weight control)dry food. I was just wondering if anybody could suggest any alternatives as he always seems to be hungry & we are wondering if he is getting enough goodness from this brand.
I did see some adverts for "Halo" cat food which sounds great but as we live in Turkey we cannot get it over here.
Any suggestions will be of great help as we want to give our cat the best food for his health.

Thanks

Most people will say that Pro Plan is a bad food to feed, however I'm not one of them because if it's on sale I will tend to buy a small bag and mix it in with the food I feed. I feed Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul- in my opinion, it's a pretty good holistic food and is extremely reasonably priced. I know there's a senior formula, an adult cat formula, and an adult lite cat formula. There might also be other ones I just haven't seen them. So my recommendation would be Chicken Soup

Pro Plan is not on the "bad" list..but it jst isn't as good as a better brand

I feed Trout Fromme dry food..It is so good for her. Her coat is the softest I have ever seen it. She is super healthy.

Checked out both of the suggested foods websites & they do sound great but once again I can't get them here

It's probably going to have to be a fairly well known brand but which is the most healthy.

Halo IMHO is not a great food as its protein comes primarily from veggies and not meat ...

Pro Plan IMHO is a decent food ... some have very little in by products but they are grain heavy... Light is a food I would avoid unless you are needing to put weight on your cat..

It may be easier if you list what you have seen available to you

I agree- we can't exactly give you advice on what you should feed your cat if we don't know what is available in your area

I can say one thing though- you are not doing any harm to your cat by feeding it Pro Plan. It's a good enough food, and like I said I occasionally even buy it for my guys and they love it. I'd say it's the best of the Purina foods.

I don't know about the PP dry, but the wet food is hardly any better than Fancy Feast. By products, artificial colors and flavors, wheat gluten, soy products. IMO - it is vastly overpriced.

If your cat is overweight, try adding wet food to his/her diet and cutting back on the dry food. Weight control dry doesn't realy work, from what I have read.

Of course, it all depends on what you can purchase there.

I totally forgot to mention that too! lol. I had a "temporary" cat in my house (it's complicated- not exactly a foster but not exactly a resident cat) and she was overweight, not by my doing but by her former owner's doing. When she was in my care, the majority of the food that she got was wet food. I have the tendency of mixing wet with dry, I'm just used to doing it and my cats love it so that's what I did with her sometimes, but while I had her she did lose some weight so I'm all for feeding more wet food. However some cats really don't like wet food, for instance my Mia won't touch wet food. She will only eat dry food, no matter how much I try to persuade her otherwise
.

So I totally agree- if you're looking to have your kitty lose some weight, then add in some wet food to it's diet. It should help

Thanks everyone. Yes it tends to be only the main brands over here ie. Pro Plan, Hills science etc. or totally obscure Turkish makes so I think I will stick with pro plan but come off the light as he just seems to eat more of that which defeats the object.
Thanks again for all your suggestions.

If Pro Plan is the best you've got in your area (and it sounds like it is) - I'd stick with the Pro Plan. We feed our cats Taste of the Wild, but as a longtime supporter of Pro Plan (that's what the dogs eat - even after trying "better" foods) I have to say that it's a good enough food and it *works*, even though the ingredients say it shouldn't.
