I thought it would be kinda fun to play some trivial pursuit.

The first person to answer the question correctly gets to choose the next question. Please provide factual data for the questions you answer.

First question:

What is the coldest temperature ever recorded, and where?

Lowest recorded temperature on earth:
-89.2 degrees Centigrade (which is -129 degrees Fahrenheit), recorded at Vostok Station, Antarctica, on July 21, 1983.
Just for fun, I also checked the lowest recorded temperature in the U.S.:
-57 degrees Centigrade (which is -70 degrees Fahrenheit), recorded at Rogers Pass, Montana, on January 20, 1954.
Both figures come from the World Meteorological Organization.

You forgot to provide factual data, Carol.

You also forgot to ask a new question. It's your turn.

Uhoh -- I thought you were just looking for the source!
What kind of factual data would you like?

Meanwhile, I'll try to think up a new question...

Maybe factual data was a poor choice of words: source is probably better.
The source would be something like the link I attached.

Y'all will have to forgive me. My brain isn't exactly functioning properly since losing Maverick.
But I'm working on it.

Ah, I see... I got it from several different internet sources, but they all quoted it from the World Meteorological Organization, so that's all I put, and it's past my bedtime, and I just can't face looking 'em up again now!

And sweetie, nothing to forgive.

Okay, new question coming up...

Yes and I just found the answer to the question by typing "first country to see the sun" into google.com - well done Chris!

I'll make my next question hard too so it's more fun right

Thinking about that first-country-to-see-the-sun-on-a-new-day question...

When 1999 became 2000, I stayed up for 26 hours watching Peter Jennings's coverage of the new year as it arrived in time zones around the world (a beautiful, very emotional event), and the tiny island nation of Tonga claimed to be the first to enter the new miillennium! I remember they had a lovely celebration with little girls dancing by torchlight on their eastern-most beaches.

So, curious as to whether it's really New Zealand or Tonga, I did some research and found that it's not as clear as it seems -- the International Date Line isn't straight, there's Daylght Savings Time to consider... it's really quite a controversy! Here's an article, if you're intrigued:

Since you said hurricane and not other types of tropical storms, I'll go with Andrew, as when you are talking about damage, I assume you mean damage in terms of cost?

From http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_th...hurricane_ever

Costliest hurricane to United States in actual dollars

Hurricane Andrew--This is probably the most recent memorable hurricanes in modern history. After struggling to develop in the Atlantic, this Category Five Hurricane rapidly developed over the Gulf Stream, and devastated South Florida with 165 mph winds on August 24, 1992. It was the costliest natural disaster on record with some $30 billion dollars in damage.

But if you consider damage in terms of human deaths, and include other types of tropical storms:

Greatest number of human casualties in the world

The 1970 Bhola cyclone was a devastating tropical cyclone that struck East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and India's West Bengal on November 12, 1970. It was the deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded, and one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern times. Up to 500,000 people lost their lives in the storm.
