and spilled red wine all over the table. I walked by and hit the glass and didn't even realize it until my friend and DH were like OH NO!!! Anyway it was all fine until I realized that my library book was on the table.

It is sorta fine..the pages aren't stuck together and nothing is really damaged the only thing is..the wine stained the edges of the pages. What should i do? its perfectly fine otherwise. Should i go buy a new copy of the book? or do what several people suggested just finish the book and return it like nothing happened? I asked here because i know alot of you frequent the library and I am the only person in my family that does. Any advice will be most appreciated!

I feel like I should take the book to the library and at least explained what happened and offer to replace it but as I mentioned several people told me this was a silly idea.

If it were me, I'd finish reading it, and when I returned it, I'd explain what happened. They may be alright with it, but even if they're not, at least you've done the right thing.

Id take it back explain what happened and just to be on the safe side purchase a copy of the book to donate to them. If its a paperback and you can get it from walmart the worst you might be out is like 6 bucks. Thats just what I would do though because the librarians at my library are evil women and really mean and nasty so Id get reamed out a new one if I did that to a book thats why I just buy all my Nora Roberts books now instead of borrowing from the library.

^It's probably a hardcover, though. Simply due to the fact that library systems only ship those through their systems.
(that and the large special edition paperbacks - the ones that would cost you $17-$20 new).

If you do have to replace it, and it's an older hardcover, check used book stores. You might get lucky and find it for a couple dollars.

Amazon Marketplace may be another place to check for used books. Just look up the name of the book in Amazon and if there are either new (from Amazon) or used (from the Marketplace) copies it will be listed. That's how I've found a lot of out of print videos and DVDs. You pay via Amazon so the 3rd party doesn't see your payment info.

You read my mind!

Next time go with vodka or an unaged rum, as those are both clear.

I think you should just take the book back when you are done with it, explain what happened, offer to replace it. If the stains are not sufficient to compromise the book, they may very well decline your offer, and they'll certainly appreciate your honesty. On the other hand, if you appear to be trying to get away with something, they might penalize you on principle. Honesty is always the best policy.

I really doubt that they will make you replace it. I have seen some pretty damaged library books in my day and I wonder why they didnt make those people replace them!

I am sure they would appreciate your honesty about what happened, but I really don't think they will ask you to pay for a new one as I am sure a few stained page edges aren't the worst that they have seen.

thank you for all the replies!

What i am goign to do is finish the book and go to the library and explain what happened. The book is still in great condition just a little stained on the edges and I will get a replacement copy. Thankfully it was a soft cover and ironiclly I found out AFTER I checked it out the author not only is a local woman but she is my oldest friend's cousin!

If the library doesn't want the replacement book then I will give it to my sister since its a great book about the life of an Animal Control Officer and she will enjoy it.

You're doing the right thing.

And how cool is it that you found out that she's related to your friend?!
